Fujitsu Launches Water-Resistant "Raku-Raku" Mobile Phone

First water-resistant model in the popular easy-to-use mobile phone series

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, July 28, 2009

Fujitsu today announced that its new Raku-Raku Phone 6 will be available in Japan through sales partner NTT DOCOMO, INC. starting August 7.

Targeting primarily the older population, the Raku-Raku (meaning "easy-to-use" in Japanese) Phone series has won accolades for being user-friendly, simple, easy to view, and dependable. Now for the first time, the Raku-Raku mobile phone series offers a model equipped with the highly requested water-resistant feature (rated IPX5/IPX7(1)) and dust-resistant technology (rated IP5X(2)). These new phones can easily be rinsed clean with water even after being covered in mud.

When it comes to water-resistant mobile phones, Fujitsu has always led the way, having previously introduced the world's thinnest water-resistant mobile phones(3) as well as DOCOMO's first water-resistant one-segment mobile phone(4). The latest Raku-Raku Phone benefits from Fujitsu's accumulated knowledge in making and testing water-resistant phones, and carries forward all of the design features that have led to the Raku-Raku series' continued success: its key design, easy-to-hold rounded body, "Open Assist" function for simple one-handed opening, and large convex buttons.

The phone's dust-resistant feature makes it especially well-adapted for gardening and fishing, along with other pastimes popular among senior users, since it can be rinsed clean with water even if it accidentally becomes covered with mud.

In terms of functionality, the phone is packed with popular smart features, including "Super-Clear Voice 3", which enhances the clarity of the caller's voice in crowded places, a camera with "Smart Auto-Focus" that maintains focus on moving subjects, "Smart Random Standby Screen" which automatically sets images sent as e-mail attachments as the phone's standby screen image, and "Smart Emoticons" which automatically convert inputted text into equivalent emoticon images. In addition to these special features, the phone also utilizes large text for its address book, and is equipped with a built-in "Exercise Monitor" to help users manage their health. Such improvements in basic functionality help define the phone as user-friendly, simple, easy to view, and dependable.

Product Features

  1. Water-resistant phone that can be rinsed clean with water
The first water-resistant model in the Raku-Raku mobile phone series, the Raku-Raku Phone 6 is rated IPX5/IPX7 against water and IP5X against dust, enabling it to withstand environments like the kitchen, the bath, and rainy days. The phone is also well-adapted for use in outdoor leisure activities like fishing or gardening, as well as for users who work in trades like farming or the fishing industry.
  2. "Super-Clear Voice 3" and "Super-Double Microphone"
"Super-Clear Voice 3" noise-detection automatically adjusts the volume of the other caller's voice according to the surrounding noise level, making them easy to hear even in a crowded environment. The phone's "Super-Double Microphone" feature automatically detects when users are in a noisy environment and suppresses background noise to ensure that their voice is transmitted clearly.
  3. "Open Assist" for easy one-handed opening
The feature to open the phone at the touch of a button has become much easier to use. It can also be closed halfway to allow users to conveniently view one-segment TV.
  4. "Light Indicator Guide" shows users how to operate the phone
With blinking buttons and on-screen icons, the improved "Light Indicator Guide" reveals to users the steps they should take to operate the phone, resulting in fewer user mistakes.
  5. "Smart Camera" for easy photography
The phone's built-in "Smart Camera" includes a "Smart Auto-Focus" function, which allows automatic focus adjustment and an easy switch between regular and close-up shots, enabling users to take high quality photographs easily. The focus automatically adjusts after pointing it at the subject, regardless of the subject's motion.
  6. "Smart Random Standby Screen"
Once a user designates certain selection criteria for e-mail addresses and titles, any picture attachments received that meet the criteria will be automatically set as the phone's standby screen image, giving users easy access to important pictures without any troublesome setup.
  7. Large, easy-to view, all-round LCD display
The phone's all-round LCD screen ensures a high level of viewability in both indoor and outdoor environments. In addition to the 2.8" wide LCD screen displays, the address book entries also use large text of 40 dots, making the contents extremely easy to view.
  8. "Smart Map Rotation"
The phone comes equipped with "Smart Map Rotation" software that constantly aligns the map with the user's direction of travel. This makes it easier to keep track of one's destination, even when visiting a location for the first time. An electronic compass application is also included in the software package, useful for hikers who wish to check the direction of their path.
  9. "Smart Emoticons"
Emoticons are created through automatically converting inputted text to their pictorial equivalents, making it easier for the user to create more expressive e-mail messages.
  10. "Exercise Monitor" to help manage health
Based on the latest health guidelines proposed by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the phone is equipped with an "Exercise Monitor" that makes it easy to track one's daily exercise routine. It can distinguish between different levels of physical exertion, such as the difference between walking on a level road or up a hill, significantly increasing its usefulness in preventing lifestyle-related diseases.
  11. One-segment TV viewer
Users can watch terrestrial digital one-segment TV with the phone.
  12. Reject calls from unregistered numbers
The mobile phone can reject incoming calls from phone numbers not stored in its address book.
  13. Charging dock comes standard
The mobile phone is easy to charge as there is no need to open the battery connector cover.
  14. Ties into docomo community
The mobile phone connects to DOCOMO's community site, docomo community. Users can easily post photos or share journal entries with family and friends via the mobile phone's software menu.
