Fujitsu to Launch Nationwide Paper Recycling System in Japan

- Reduces burden on the environment, security risks and processing costs -

Tokyo, March 17, 2009 — Fujitsu Limited today announced that it will introduce a nationwide paper recycling system on April 1 to process ordinary and confidential wastepaper disposed of by offices of Fujitsu Group companies in Japan. Fujitsu will become the first Japanese company to establish a nationwide system based on unified standards for the collection of paper waste and the secure handling of confidential wastepaper.

In addition to generating zero emissions⁽¹⁾ on the processing of ordinary and confidential wastepaper from Fujitsu offices, the new system will reduce overall wastepaper processing costs, utilize an efficient collection system to reduce the burden on the environment, and implement standards for handling of confidential wastepaper to reduce security risks.

In Japan, each office in the Fujitsu Group has recycled ordinary and confidential wastepaper separately through their own individual systems, which has escalated paper hauling and recycling costs and resulted in a wide variation in the process of handling confidential wastepaper.

Under the framework of its integrated Environmental Management System⁽²⁾ , Fujitsu has now created a unified nationwide paper recycling system. Under the new system, ordinary and confidential wastepaper will be efficiently collected and transported from each geographic cluster of Fujitsu offices through centrally managed collection rounds, and then processed in accordance with strict and uniform handling standards, thereby resulting in a lower burden on the environment, higher security, and lower costs.

Features of the New Paper Recycling System:

1. Sets up centrally managed and efficient collection rounds covering Fujitsu offices in a given geographic cluster to reduce collection costs and the burden on the environment.
2. Reduces costs and ensures zero-emissions processing by combining ordinary and confidential wastepaper recycling under one unified system.
3. Ensures the destruction of confidential information⁽³⁾ in accordance with uniform standards to maintain a high security level nationwide while also maintaining the recyclability of confidential wastepaper.
4. By utilizing the framework of the Fujitsu Group's integrated Environmental Management System, the new recycling system will be applied to 79 of Fujitsu Limited's company offices, 276 office locations of 53 Fujitsu Group companies in Japan, and 10 factories located in close proximity to these offices. Fujitsu expects to widen the scope to other office locations in the future.
5. Fujitsu will also deploy a traceability system for strict management of waste confidential documents as well as an IT system that performs uniform management of data on paper processing and data tracking and reporting for each office location.

Operation of the paper recycling system will be conducted using Japan Information Security and Recycling Network⁽⁴⁾ , which will be established in April. The organization brings together expertise in paper recycling of both ordinary and confidential wastepaper and will operate in accordance with a uniform nationwide standard.

2 Integrated Environmental Management System:

The Environmental Management System operated by the Fujitsu Group. This is a framework applied to 96 companies in Japan, 11 companies worldwide (as of January, 2009) that is operated in accordance with ISO14001, the international standard for environmental management systems.

3 Destruction of confidential information:

The destruction of confidential information through shredding prevents violations of confidentiality, while still enabling the documents to be recycled.

4 Japan Information Security and Recycling Network:

A nationwide organization comprised of 10 confidential waste processing companies and one ordinary wastepaper recycling company, all meeting the same high standards for wastepaper processing.
