Fujitsu Joins Business and Biodiversity Initiative

- Seeks to protect biodiversity and ensure sustainable use of natural resources -

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, May 29, 2008

Fujitsu Limited announced today it will join the Business and Biodiversity Initiative by signing a Leadership Declaration on May 29 (local time) at the Ninth Conference of the Parties (COP9) to the Convention on Biological Diversity(1) being held in Bonn, Germany.

In joining the initiative, Fujitsu will further promote the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.

About the Business and Biodiversity Initiative

At COP9, the German government is encouraging private-sector corporations to take a more active role in protecting biological diversity. Companies that support the German government-sponsored initiative and sign the Leadership Declaration will be expected to promote the preservation of biodiversity in their business activities.

To sustain their business activities, corporations need - in addition to natural resources and energy - a sustainable ecological foundation, including biodiversity. To promote the stability of this foundation and sustainability over the next 50 or 100 years, business practices that reduce resource use and protect biodiversity are essential. In support of this approach, Fujitsu is joining the Business and Biodiversity Initiative.

About Fujitsu's Biodiversity Efforts

The Fujitsu Way, which embodies the philosophy of the Fujitsu Group, articulates the Group's overarching values, and defines concrete principles and a code of conduct that Group employees follow in their daily business activities, includes as one of its values the protection of the environment and contributions to society. Accordingly, as a good corporate citizen, Fujitsu seeks to contribute to the creation of a more prosperous world through its corporate activities.

The Fujitsu Group began biodiversity-preservation projects as long ago as 1998 in Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with afforestation programs designed to regenerate the mangrove and tropical rain forests in those countries. In Japan, the Group has also undertaken afforestation projects in the Mt. Aso region as well as in Kochi Prefecture and Wakayama Prefecture, to maintain biodiversity.

The Fujitsu Group will use its global environmental management system to promote environmental activities, raise awareness through environmental education inside and outside the company, collaborate with NPOs and disclose information on its initiatives and results, further protecting biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.

  • [1] Convention on Biological Diversity

Adopted at the UN Earth Summit in 1992, this convention seeks to ensure the protection of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair distribution of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. COP9 (Ninth Conference of the Parties), which runs May 19-30 in Bonn, is the conference for signatory countries. At COP8 in 2006, a decision was adopted to encourage private-sector participation in the protocol. COP10 is scheduled to be held in Nagoya in 2010.
