Fujitsu To Release XFP-type 10 Gbps Optical Transceiver with 40km Transmission Distance and Operable Temperature Range of -40°C to 85°C

Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of a new 10 Gbps Small Form Factor Pluggable (XFP)-type optical transceiver that is capable of operating over a wide temperature range of –40°C (-40°F ) to 85°C (185°F ), and at distances of up to 40 km. The transceiver, which will make possible smaller optical transmission equipment that can function at higher speeds and in harsher temperature environments, will be available from July 1, 2007.

With ever-increasing demand for broadband access bandwidth and a proliferation in networked applications and services, backbone networks and corporate networks can expect dramatic increases in traffic volume. Accordingly, there is a growing need for optical transceivers that can support high-capacity, ultra-reliable optical networks capable of handling heavy traffic volume for a wide range of applications.

The XFP-type of optical transceiver is the smallest transceiver within the 10 Gbps Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) optical module international industry standard, and one notable for having pluggable optical and electrical interfaces. This has made XFP the popular choice of a number of companies developing next-generation 10 Gbps optical transceivers.

Conventional XFP optical transceivers have only been able to operate over a temperature range of –5°C (23°F) to 70°C (158°F). Higher temperatures in modern optical equipment, resulting from increasingly compact, high-speed, multi-port devices as well as the need to install devices in environments with harsh temperatures have created demand for transceivers that are capable of operating in broader range of temperatures.

The following technological innovations by Fujitsu have made possible commercialization of the new optical transceiver combining high performance and extreme temperature endurance:

1. Control-circuit technology enabling stable operation of optical devices over a wide range of temperatures
2. High-efficiency heat dissipation construction

Fujitsu plans to apply these technologies to other products, expanding its lineup of products that can operate in extreme temperatures.

Product Features

1. Supports both 9.95 Gbps and 10.3 Gbps rates in the 10 Gbps band

Compatible with Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and other communication equipment that operates at 9.95 Gbps, as well as 10 Gigabit Ethernet data communications equipment that operates at 10.3 Gbps.

2. Stable operation in temperature range of –40°C (-40°F) to 85°C (185°F)

Control circuitry that enables optical devices to operate stably over a wide temperature range and highly efficient temperature dissipation ability, enabling the transceiver to operate dependably between –40°C (-40°F) and 85°C (185°F), thereby permitting installation in compact, high-speed, multi-port devices as well as in outdoor equipment subject to extreme temperature.

3. Pluggable design for easier expandability and maintenance

Using its original optical technology and high-density mounting technology, Fujitsu has developed an XFP pluggable transceiver with pluggable optical and electrical interfaces, enabling easy expansion or maintenance of a system without shutting it down.

Product samples will be on exhibit at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC) 2007 in Anaheim California, from March 27 to 29, 2007.

Fujitsu offers a wide range of extreme temperature-capable networking products, ranging from GPON and other access networks to trunk and metropolitan networks utilizing this new transceiver.
