Vivek Mahajan (CTO) Talks about Creating a Trusted Digital Society

On July 15, 2022, the World Digital Conference 2022 (organized by Nikkei) was held on the theme of digital trust. Vivek Mahajan, Executive Officer and SEVP CTO, introduced five technologies that support the creation of a trusted digital society, with a focus on the social digital twin that Fujitsu is developing.

Growing concern about uncertain information, as well as demand for trusted information

Today, there is a growing interest in trust for information (data). The 2022 Edelman Trust Barometer, a trust survey conducted in 28 countries around the world, revealed that 76% of people are concerned about the possibility of false information or fake news being used as a weapon.

In addition, social manipulation through inappropriate use of information is already emerging as a real issue, such as in the Cambridge Analytica scandal where personal data from a social networking service was improperly used for election campaign. Furthermore, the threats caused by inaccurate information can be serious issues, such as the impact on automated driving due to the falsification of digital maps and the impact on rehabilitation and treatment due to the falsification of avatar physical information and health data. The metaverse space that has recently been attracting attention can be affected as well. Ensuring the trusted information is the key to building a trustworthy society.

A highly trusted digital society with five technologies

How can we deal with the threat caused by such uncertain information? At Fujitsu, we aim to solve such threats through innovation, with the purpose of making the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation.

Fujitsu’s Purpose

To achieve this, we are focusing on the following five digital technologies.

  • Converging Technologies:
Connecting data to action in the real society, using digital technology and knowledge from the humanities and social sciences.
  • Data & Security:
Protecting data, systems, and the organization
  • AI:
Analyzing data by AI to help people expand their capabilities, make decisions, and new discoveries
  • Network:
Supporting society and businesses by delivering data at ultra-high speed and securely
  • Computing:
Processing enormous amounts of data reliably to support all activities
Five Key Digital Technologies

Social digital twin—digital rehearsal tool

Among these five technologies, converging technologies, that combines the humanities and social sciences with digital technologies, plays a key role in data analysis. In converging technologies, Fujitsu is developing a social digital twin that analyzes business, society, and human behavior and performs simulations and forecasts in a virtual space.

This is a technology that enables various social experiments and simulations to be rehearsed digitally in a virtual space by utilizing digital twin technology that digitizes information in the real world and reproduces it realistically in a virtual space.

How can social trust be enhanced by reproducing it realistically on a computer? Here are some use cases.

Use case 1: Planning transportation measures to reduce CO2 emissions

In order to reduce CO2 emissions, frequent traffic congestion needs be reduced. Based on the data of hourly traffic volume and movement of people, introduction of incentive programs for highway, public transportation, and bicycle is one effective method to reduce. However, when considering such measures, it is not easy to reach a consensus among stakeholders such as the government, police, and users. Therefore, by visualizing the effects of CO2 reduction through simulation utilizing the social digital twin, it can be expected to raise the awareness of stakeholders participating in transportation policy planning.

Use case 2: Digital rehearsal for enhancing accessibility

The social digital twin is also being used in efforts to raise accessibility in the society. By reproducing a real city in a virtual space, multiple patterns of accessibility are rehearsed and their effects are analyzed, such as accessibility of roads in daily life and areas around stations. Fujitsu is working to clarify the elements and systems necessary to reach consensus among users, government, and local residents, and to implement measures to ensure high stakeholder satisfaction.

Fujitsu Technologies Supporting Social Trust

In order to build a trusted society, not only the social digital twin is important, but also the supporting technologies of computing, network, AI, and data & security. Here is an introduction to each of these technologies.

Computing
Computing power that can reliably process vast amounts of information is essential to ensure the reliability of information. High performance computing (HPC) and quantum computing can be effectively applied to real-time and massive information processing such as social digital twin. Fujitsu will provide these computing technologies as a platform (Computing as a Service or CaaS) that can be seamlessly leveraged on public clouds, such as Azure, starting in October 2022.

Network
Ultra high-speed, secure, and intelligent networks that can transmit vast amounts of data are an important infrastructure for supporting social trust. Fujitsu aims to develop 5G and other next-generation networks, as well as network beyond 5G and 6G.

AI
AI analysis is important to gain new insights and knowledge from the vast amount of information. Fujitsu has developed and provided Human Sensing technology that can recognize human behavior with the world’s highest accuracy. Also, the world’s only explainable AI that can collaborate with people and explain the reasons for decisions and solutions, and the world’s only causal discovery AI that can find important causal relationships from vast amounts of data and lead to new discoveries are available from Fujitsu.

Data & Security
To protect data, systems, and the organization, Fujitsu is developing block-chain and transparent trust technology.

Creating a sustainable future society through technology across industries and countries

Fujitsu is implementing initiatives to build a social trust with various stakeholders by utilizing the social digital twin. As part of this effort, we are working with Kawasaki City in Kanagawa Prefecture to solve social issues through social digital twin.

The goal is to transform and accelerate people’s environmental and corporate decarbonization behavior by analyzing social contribution scores to each of the following categories: environment, health, work and lifestyle, safety and security, and diversity. This is not limited to Kawasaki City and will be offered as a platform to other local governments in the future.

Collaboration of Fujitsu and Kawasaki City

Fujitsu will continue to pursue technology to protect the trust of people and society by proposing sophisticated measures with trusted and high quality data. We will then develop technologies that realize transparent and trusted society and deliver them to various stakeholders, thereby creating a sustainable future society with technology regardless of industries and countries.
