News facts:
  • Fujitsu AI Center of Excellence at Paris-Saclay to be expanded and more AI researchers to be recruited to support Fujitsu’s European AI activities
  • Fujitsu will participate in an EU Horizon 2020 research project to develop an AI solution that reinforces the security of banking networks
  • AI Center of Excellence in Paris-Saclay to integrate with Fujitsu’s wider European network of AI research and implementation capabilities, including Industry 4.0 Center in Munich, Germany
Munich, March 29, 2018 - Fujitsu is boosting its Artificial Intelligence (AI) research activities in Europe, including an extension of its AI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Paris-Saclay1, plans to recruit additional AI researchers, and participation in a prestigious new EU AI research project. These plans were shared by Fujitsu at the ‘AI for Humanity’ summit hosted by Emmanuel Macron, President of France, at the Collège de France in Paris on March 29.
The aim of these initiatives is to increase the speed of adoption of AI technologies by providing a wide range of improved services for consumers and businesses across Europe, such as faster, more accurate healthcare diagnosis and more secure online banking.
EU Horizon 2020 research project
Fujitsu has joined an EU Horizon 2020 research project, with the aim to develop an AI solution to reinforce the security of banking networks. The project will introduce a novel predictive and integrated approach to the cyber and physical security of critical infrastructures in the financial sector. Data-driven AI-based mechanisms will identify and anticipate security incidents, enabling financial institutions to handle more complex attacks and to comply with regulations faster and at less cost. Work on the EU Horizon 2020 AI project will take place in Fujitsu’s AI CoE in France.
More than 30 AI projects are already underway at the CoE focusing on the use of video analytics in the retail and industrial sectors. Fujitsu and Inria, a national research institute dedicated to digital technology, have established a long-term research and a co-creation program at Paris-Saclay to develop new AI and machine learning techniques by leveraging advanced mathematics and computing. The Fujitsu AI CoE also promotes academic partnerships, initiating talent exchanges within Fujitsu’s capabilities in Europe and in Japan and high-ranked institutions such as Ecole Polytechnique and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden.2
Duncan Tait, Corporate Executive Officer, SEVP and Head of Americas and EMEIA at Fujitsu, says: “This extension underlines Fujitsu’s ongoing investment in developing Artificial Intelligence solutions to help drive our customers’ businesses. The expansion of our AI CoE in Paris-Saclay further reinforces our substantial AI capabilities in Europe, in addition to our existing network of competency centers which offer innovative AI services to our customers – including an Innovation Center for Data Analytics in Madrid, Spain, which is focused on heritage data integration, and our Industry 4.0 Center in Munich, Germany.”
Paris-Saclay initiative builds on Fujitsu’s 30-year heritage in Artificial Intelligence
Fujitsu has invested in AI research for more than 30 years and its strategy includes collaborative research within wider ecosystems, as underlined by a 50 million Euro initiative with Paris-Saclay announced last year to support French organizations with their digital transformation. By combining its own expertise with Paris-Saclay’s vibrant innovation ecosystem, Fujitsu has already engaged in co-creation projects with one third of the start-ups on-site. Additionally, Fujitsu is already implementing large-scale AI deployments, for example in working with the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid to provide a support system for clinical decisions, based on data fusion, and helping leading wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa to implement a quality control system leveraging AI.
Notes to editors
1 Fujitsu’s AI CoE was opened in September 2017 at the Drahi X-Novation Center in Paris-Saclay, the incubator of the Ecole Polytechnique.
2 The Fujitsu AI CoE talent exchange includes an exchange program between the Ecole Polytechnique and Fujitsu R&D Laboratories in Japan which started in 2017 and a research, education and innovation program, with Chalmers University of Technology, a leading university in Sweden, whereby a class of selected students will join the French experts at the Paris-Saclay AI CoE later in 2018 to work on projects leveraging AI to meet customer needs.
