Fujitsu Group in World's First Acquisition of Third-Party Certification for ISO 22301, the International Standard for Business Continuity Management Systems

Fujitsu Limited,Fujitsu FSAS Inc.

Tokyo and Kawasaki, August 27, 2012

Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu FSAS Inc. today announced that their maintenance services business in Japan for customer IT infrastructure acquired certification for ISO 22301(1), the international standard for business continuity management systems (BCMS), by a third-party certification body on August 24, becoming the first organization in the world to do so.

Background

The Great East Japan Earthquake and the Thai floods of last year had a significant impact on the day to day activities of many companies, including those in Japan. In addition to natural disasters, preparing for a variety of other risks to business continuity—terrorism, cyber-attacks, and the spread infectious diseases, such as new strains of influenza—has become an important corporate management issue.

In these circumstances, business continuity management has received considerable attention as a technique to promote continued operations in the face of unexpected disasters or accidents. Since the BS 25999(2) management system standard was first introduced in the UK in 2007, other countries have begun to engage in standardization efforts. On May 15, 2012, the ISO 220301 standard was issued as an international standard for business continuity management systems.

Fujitsu Group Initiatives

As a business that supplies ICT systems to customers that support social infrastructure, the Fujitsu Group attributes high priority to ensuring continued operations, despite the occurrence of unexpected disasters or accidents, in order to provide reliable, high-quality support and services.

Based on experiences from the Great Hanshin/Awaji Earthquake of 1995, the Fujitsu Group constructed a system to continuously provide maintenance services designed to restore customer ICT systems in the event of unexpected disasters or accidents. Along with this system, Fujitsu has implemented various disaster countermeasures, and is also engaging in ongoing training and improvement programs. Furthermore, each year on Disaster Preparedness Day, which is held annually on September 1st in Japan, the Fujitsu Group performs large-scale recovery training drills for customer systems assuming a true disaster situation.

Fujitsu has practiced business continuity management since 2006, and has endeavored to formulate and improve its business continuity plans. In 2008, Fujitsu acquired BS 25999 certification, the British Standard certification for business continuity management systems, becoming the first organization in Japan to do so.

As a result of these efforts, Fujitsu continued maintenance services without interruption during the Great East Japan Earthquake and Thai floods in 2011, contributing to rehabilitation assistance as well as maintaining safe and stable operations for customer ICT systems.

Fujitsu is the first organization in the world to receive third-party certification, having acquired it from BSI Group Japan K.K.(3), a third-party certification body. This is evidence that the continuous improvement efforts on the part of its maintenance services business in Japan meets the requirements for business continuity management systems provided by the ISO 220301 standard.

Moving forward, the Fujitsu Group will endeavor to improve its in-house business continuity capabilities by continuing to provide business continuity management solutions and by strengthening various countermeasure options. Furthermore, as a trusted partner to its customers, it will contribute to maintaining a stable public infrastructure and to raising the corporate value for its customers by providing high-quality, highly reliable support services.
