Fujitsu's STYLISTIC Q550/C Tablet PCs Bring ICT to Japan's Junior High School Classrooms

Part of the Japanese government's Future School Promotion Project and Educational Innovation Project

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, April 06, 2012

Fujitsu today announced that its STYLISTIC Q550/C tablet PCs are being used at three junior high schools in Japan – Shouei Junior High School (approx. 300 students) in Shinchi Town, Fukushima Prefecture, Joto Junior High School (approx. 300 students) in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, and Saga Prefectural Takeo Seiryo Junior High School (approx. 500 students) in Saga Prefecture. These three schools were selected as trial schools for the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan's Future School Promotion Project and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan's Educational Innovation Project, both of which began at junior high schools in fiscal 2011.

In February 2012, ICT environments were installed at each school and have been in use since. At the beginning of this school year in April, the schools will hold classes that take full advantage of the ICT resources. The classes will involve field research on learning techniques and instruction methods that leverage ICT devices, including a tablet PC for each child and interactive whiteboards. The project is scheduled to run until fiscal 2013.

The new project is being jointly conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Starting in fiscal 2010, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has been pursuing a research study as part of its "Future School Promotion Project" aimed at fostering cooperative education that utilizes ICT, and is currently conducting field research at ten public elementary schools. Since fiscal 2011, the project has been jointly conducted together with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Educational Innovation Project, with eight new junior high schools and two special-needs schools having been newly selected for participation.

The Fujitsu Group was commissioned to support the field research at five elementary schools in Western Japan in fiscal 2010. Fujitsu provided support in a variety of ways, including ICT environment installation for the field research, dispatching ICT support personnel to each school, developing a portal site to share information between trial schools and an educational cloud to deliver curriculum and other materials, and propose ways in which ICT can be applied to lessons.

In the latest project, local municipalities will oversee the procurement of ICT, and the three junior high schools selected as trial schools for the project will use Fujitsu's STYLISTIC Q550/C tablet PCs. In addition, Fujitsu has received an order to install a field research environment at Joto Junior High School in Wakayama City that can be employed outside the school and from home.

As part of the installation of the ICT environments, Fujitsu will provide support for the following kinds of learning and instruction.

  • Learning that accommodates each child's individual pace of education by offering curriculum suited to the child's learning progress.
  • Cooperative education that incorporates media and encourages children to communicate with and teach each other.
  • Detailed understanding of a child's learning status by teachers and individually tailored instruction.

In each region, local municipalities have already made efforts to actively deploy and utilize ICT in the field of education, and in light of the results of the new research, they plan to fully expand the use of ICT with the goal of advancing education. In Shinchi Town, Fukushima Prefecture, together with three elementary schools that are already equipped with ICT environments featuring one PC per child, the town will employ ICT to enable consistent elementary and junior high school education throughout all of its schools. Wakayama City in Wakayama Prefecture has deployed LIFEBOOK T730/B tablet PCs and other devices in the computer labs of all of the city's elementary schools. Going forward, the city is exploring the possibility of equipping all of its elementary and middle schools with mobile PCs that are not only for use in computer labs, but can be freely carried around campus.

In Saga Prefecture, Saga Prefectural Chienkan Junior High School (approx. 500 students) currently employs one STYLISTIC Q550/C tablet PC per child, and in the future, the prefecture plans to promote the use of ICT in education by building an environment for one device per child at the prefecture's middle schools, high schools and special-needs schools.

Looking ahead, Fujitsu plans to continue field research to help foster cooperative education that employs ICT, while at the same time delivering a variety of services that leverage the company's track record and know-how in this field to support the future of education.
