The NABERS energy rating is calculated based on power usage effectiveness (PUE), namely the management of energy and carbon emissions in a data centre compared to others in the data centre market. Results are then communicated via a simple six-star rating scale, where one star represents poor performance, and three stars is the average. Previously rated at 3.5 stars, a range of energy-saving measures have been implemented at Malaga over the last 12 months leading to the increased rating, including lighting upgrades and air conditioning efficiency measures.

Starting in 2017, Fujitsu Australia embarked on a AUD$66.5 million data centre upgrade program to meet the demands of the market and customer uptime expectations. This upgrade will further improve and standardise the performance, resilience, and reliability of its enterprise data centres in Western Sydney, Noble Park, and Malaga. The Malaga data centre upgrade is specifically aimed at improving the resilience of the data centre site, particularly its electrical infrastructure.
Fujitsu consulted with the Uptime Institute on the design of the Malaga data centre, to ensure the upgrade achieves Tier IV as a design and constructed facility. The procurement of the plant and all equipment is now complete. Construction works are due to begin in January 2019 and the project is on schedule to be completed in June 2019.
