More Flexibility, Manageability and Serviceability for Mission-Critical Computing with New Fujitsu PRIMERGY Servers

New world record TPC Benchmark underlines PRIMERGY superiority in x86-based datacenter computing stakes

Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited

Hong Kong, July 01, 2011

Fujitsu today announces a major step forwards as x86-based servers continue to move into the arena of mission-critical computing. Providing enterprises with new datacenter economics in comparison to legacy RISC/UNIX systems, Fujitsu today introduces new PRIMERGY x86 servers that set a new world record benchmark in terms of transactional database performance.

The proliferation of business intelligence, data warehousing applications and other demanding high-performance back-end databases make reliable scale-up server performance crucial for a wide range of business sectors. Demand continues to grow significantly for flexible, stable scale-up platforms that deliver a quicker return on investment.

Immediate availability¹ of the world-record breaking Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX900 S2 eight-socket rack server and the PRIMERGY RX600 S6 four-socket rack server removes the performance difference that has previously tied enterprises to more expensive and proprietary server systems. With the new generation of PRIMERGY servers, Fujitsu is entering a new high end performance class for x86 servers – providing customers with unbeatable flexibility, manageability and serviceability as datacenter needs inevitably change or grow.

The PRIMERGY RX900 S2 offers many industries, notably the financial and public sectors, the high-levels of reliability for running scale-up applications that was previously dominated by expensive and proprietary RISC/UNIX systems. When paired with the lower price point PRIMERGY RX600 S6, which is designed for customers in the upper-mid-market as well as large enterprises, Fujitsu is showing enterprises a clear path for easily managed and serviced performance scale-up.

The new PRIMERGY models feature Fujitsu’s ‘glue-less’ design, meaning that no additional hardware is necessary to run all eight CPUs. Based on Intel QuickPath Interconnect Technology, this design helps avoid I/O bottlenecks by providing the shortest route between processors, memory modules and I/O hubs. As a result, the new systems deliver mission-critical peace-of-mind at an affordable price. Seamless scale-up is also a hallmark of PRIMERGY models, since processor, memory and I/O components can all be upgraded, leaving organizations with headroom for cost-effective future growth without having to rebuild entire racks or purchase new systems.

Jens-Peter Seick, Senior Vice President Product Development Group at Fujitsu Technology Solutions says: "This new generation of x86 servers is taking Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers into a different league. The steady erosion of UNIX server market share by x86-based systems will now accelerate. Fujitsu’s new breed of scale-up PRIMERGY servers are proving themselves equally capable of the heavy lifting required in high-end datacenter environments, while also setting new, radically lower price points for mission-critical computing."

World-record breaking performance from PRIMERGY RX900 S2

The Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) ranks at launch the PRIMERGY RX900 S2 as the top TPC-E performing server system². According to the TPC-E rankings, Fujitsu’s PRIMERGY servers are not only consistently among the most powerful servers in the world, but also repeatedly offer among the best price-performance.

Centralized mission-critical corporate workloads can be deployed reliably on the PRIMERGY RX900 S2 for extreme performance requirements. Processing power is assured by using up to 8 Intel Xeon E7-8800 CPUs providing 80 processor cores, up to 4TB of main memory, plus a highly-aggregated I/O bandwidth of more than 100 gigabytes. The RX600 S6 four- socket server provides up to 40 processor cores using the new Intel Xeon E7-4800 processor generation and supports up to 2TB of main memory.

The PRIMERGY RX900 S2 provides unprecedented operational continuity as its high-availability functions perfectly combine with the new reliability-, availability-, and scalability functions of the Intel Xeon E7-8800 series processor.

The Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) defines transaction processing and database benchmarks to independently evaluate the power and performance of modern On-line Transaction Processing (OLTP) Systems.

Notes to Editors:

¹ The PRIMERGY RX900 S2 is available globally except for Japan. The PRIMERGY RX600 S6 is available globally, ready to order from July 4, 2011.

² Competitive benchmark results stated above reflect results published as of June 6, 2011 at: http://www.tpc.org/tpce/results/tpce_perf_results.asp . The TPC Benchmark™ is a trademark or registered trademark of the Transaction Processing Performance Council.

The Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX900 S2 system using eight Intel® Xeon® E7-8870 2.40 GHz Processors and a memory of 2TB achieved a TPC-E result of 4.555 tpsE and a price/performance score of 217.27 USD per tpsE (24 percent better price/performance than the current closest 8 socket competitor system using the same processor technology, with 4.200 tpsE and 287.42 USD per tpsE). Fujitsu PRIMERGY RX900 S2 is also the first 8-socket server to achieve a TPC-Energy Benchmark with only 1.00 watt per tpsE. System availability date is mid-July 2011.

About the TCP Benchmark

TPC Benchmark™ E (TPC-E) is a On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) workload developed by the TPC. The TPC-E benchmark simulates the OLTP workload of a brokerage firm. The focus of the benchmark is the central database that executes transactions related to the firm’s customer accounts. Although the underlying business model of TPC-E is a brokerage firm, the database schema, data population, transactions, and implementation rules have been designed to be broadly representative of modern OLTP systems.
