Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand, a leading provider of information technology and communications solutions, today announced the expansion of its sustainability program through a global initiative, with the aim of achieving a cumulative reduction of 15 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by fiscal 2012. Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand has been playing a leading role in the global expansion of local activities that will assist customers and societies around the world in reducing their environmental footprint and mark a significant step in Fujitsu’s global environmental vision, Green Policy 2020, to support the creation of a prosperous, low-carbon society.

“As a leading innovator and provider of sustainable solutions, Fujitsu embraces the challenge of saving more than 15 million tonnes of carbon globally by 2012,” states Alison O’Flynn, Director of Sustainability, Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand. “Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand will play a key role in achieving this objective, from our data centre outsource operations alone we can save our customers over a quarter of a million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. These savings and the many other solutions that we provide, underline Fujitsu’s genuine commitment to the realisation of a sustainable future.”

Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand’s Sustainability Consulting Specialists work with many organisations to enhance their sustainability strategy. Leading businesses depend on these services to improve their sustainability outcomes; meeting the needs of regulatory compliance and reducing their emissions profile. Through the success that Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand has achieved in delivering benefits to customers through these services, this locally developed consulting practice will be deployed by Fujitsu regions around the globe.

Fujitsu is investing heavily to support the expansion of its Data Centres of Excellence in 2010, including building one of Australia’s most advanced environmentally sustainable data centres in Perth, to open in the new fiscal year. Fujitsu is also committed to a major program of work in Victoria that will make a significant contribution to cutting greenhouse gas emissions for its customers.

Innovation in both technologies and services are supporting Fujitsu customers to reduce the environmental footprint of their IT infrastructure. Fujitsu servers, storage systems, PCs, networking equipment and other hardware products feature world-class energy-efficiency and compact design. In addition, Fujitsu supports server virtualisation with its middleware products, and delivers outsourcing services through data centres designed for energy-efficiency.

International debate regarding greenhouse gas emissions reduction has been intensifying with the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) taking place at Bella Centre in Copenhagen from the 7th to the 18th of December 2009. There is a shared international goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and to achieve this goal it is estimated that worldwide emissions must be capped by 2020 at the very latest. The rapid global adoption of energy-saving products and services and the introduction of other advanced environmental technologies in both developed and developing nations are seen as essential to meeting these goals.

“Fujitsu is committed to addressing the pressing issue of climate change,” states Rod Vawdrey, Chief Executive Officer, Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand. “As the Australian economy moves towards carbon reporting and carbon trading, our expertise and innovation in the development and implementation of sustainable business strategy and solutions are going to become increasingly important. Fujitsu is continually innovating with green IT products and services that help organisations reduce their carbon footprint through more sustainable practices and technology.”
