Fujitsu Australia launches Digital Media Networks in 3D

Three-dimensional design technology, originally developed for designing missiles in the US military, will be demonstrated by Fujitsu for the first time in Australia as the latest advance in digital media networking at the Retail Business Technology Expo in Melbourne from July 20-22.

The new technology will project images and messages in 3D out of an LCD screen so viewers will be able to see the graphics suspended in space without 3D glasses.

Marcus May, National Retail Industry Director at Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand, says: "There's disenchantment out there with mass TV advertising. It's a much more competitive retail world. Retailers need to cut through the clutter and target customers more tightly. Digital media networking is coming of age as a powerful marketing and information tool.

"The attraction of digital media networks is that the message is sent to customers while they are in the store with money in their pockets and an intention to buy - the right message, the right place at the right time."

Digital media networks allow any form of content - video, text, audio and graphics - in any technology format to be centrally managed and transmitted to a network of devices, such as screens, kiosks, handheld devices and point-of-sale systems simultaneously. Digital media networks can be used for marketing messages and promotions in the retail environment and as an entertainment and information tool in transport, banking and public thoroughfares.

Fujitsu's digital media networking product TELentice was developed in Australia and is deployed worldwide, from Sydney's light rail to the London Underground. It is a software platform that schedules, manages and audits content being sent out to communications devices. TELentice centrally stores and transmits digital media across Internet Protocol networks including wireless technology. It can update or change streamed content dynamically and can be integrated into CRM and POS systems to trigger targeted messaging. It can also scale to millions of computer devices easily, and provides detailed reporting, which can be used for cross correlation of data.

While digital media networks have been available for several years, the technology is currently experiencing a surge in demand. "Broadband and 3G networks are bringing digital media networks to life," says May. "Screens are becoming cheaper and the methods for delivering content are more cost-effective. This is a proven technology. Now that the cost barriers have lifted, the demand is huge."
