Portugal Fujitsu to deliver card reader software for Population Register Centre's certificate cards

November 30, 2007

ICT services company Fujitsu Services Oy delivers card reader software to the Population Register Centre (VRK) for using certificate cards issued by it. The new card reader software is based on Fujitsu's mPollux technology. The software delivery agreement was signed for five years.

The card reader software allows the holder of a VRK's certificate card to use the card and the certificates on it for the public sector's and private companies' electronic services that require secure authentication. In addition, the card can be used for workstation logins, encrypting e-mails and providing electronic signature.

The software is operable with Microsoft Windows (32- and 64-bit), Mac OS and Linux operating systems and the commonly used browser, e-mail and other applications.

There are various types of VRK's certificate cards, such as organisation cards utilising VRK's organisation certificate. In addition, they include the chip ID card issued by the police, and the Visa Electron card of the OP Pohjola Group. There are currently some 25,000 cards with an organisation certificate, and some 150,000 cards with a Citizen Certificate in use. The so-called government certificates issued for public officials are currently being deployed throughout the government.

The new card reader software will be available at the beginning of 2008 for all VRK's certificate card holders free of charge. The software can be downloaded from VRK's website at www.fineid.fi.
