Malaysia’s Tropical Rainforest Gets Fujitsu Restoration Support

Japanese ICT company plants 1000 nursery trees at Malaysia Eco-Forest Park; Demonstrates Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) leadership in biodiversity and environment preservation

Kuala Lumpur, December 20, 2012

Fujitsu, Asia’s leading ICT solutions and services provider, today shares on its 10th “Fujitsu Tropical Rainforest Regeneration Project” (‘FTRR Project’) to restore the lush of tropical rainforests in Borneo.

Launched in 2002, the FTRR project is a voluntary activity which aims to revitalize 150 hectares of Fujitsu’s Malaysia Eco-Forest Park located at Kinarut, Sabah on the Borneo Island, with the assistance of Sabah Forestry Development Authority (‘SAFODA’) and the Japan International Forestry Promotion and Corporation Center (‘JIFC’).

Malaysian forests have been decimated by slash-burn agriculture, commercial deforestation and palm-oil plantations, therefore restoring the forest has become an urgent concern.

Michele Lum, Marketing Director of Fujitsu Malaysia says, “SAFODA has been trying to recover the original forest with the support of JIFC for the development of tree-planting technologies and the training of technicians.”

“To be exact, the Fujitsu FTRR project advocates the growth of a specific indigenous rainforest species known as the ‘Dipterocarp’ – which is a slow-grow tree species and is decreasing drastically due to the large cut down volume for the manufacture of lauan plywood for export purposes,” says Lum, adding that it is very difficult for the forest to regenerate by itself.

This year alone, Fujitsu planted 1,000 Dipterocarp nurseries in an event that saw 163 individuals - from Fujitsu Group, SAFODA, University Sabah Malaysia, Embassy of Japan Malaysia and Kinabalu Japanese School, taking part in the tree planting project held over two weekends between November 23 and December 2, 2012.

Lum further shared, “The survival rate of nursery trees we planted is 48% as of June 2012. Our continuous effort can increase the survival rate by planting new seedings in the areas where trees have died."

Thus far, Fujitsu has planted more than 40,000 Dipterocarp nurseries and maintains them with the operating fund gathered via the donation from over 10,000 Fujitsu Group’s employees.

The Creation of Green Zone and Environment Preservation

Lum says, “Tropical rainforests is a very important ecosystem where more than half of Earth’s species live in. The FTRR Project is a long term CSR commitment in Malaysia as the company’s contribution towards biodiversity and environment preservation.”

She adds that Fujitsu has also started surveying the wildlife periodically in the area in order to assess the degree of biodiversity in the tropical rainforest as they regenerate.”

“Moving towards achieving our vision of a Human Centric Intelligent Society, Fujitsu is stepping up its support to establish green ecosystem network in local communities, and take initiatives to realize a greener future,” she ends.
