Fujitsu Group Malaysia Eco-Forest Park

Fujitsu Group implements forestation activity by Group employees as the 3rd Malaysia forestation volunteer activity

Kuala Lumpur, January 12, 2004 Volunteers from FMS

Fujitsu Malaysia Sdn Bhd today announced that it has established the "Fujitsu Group Malaysia Eco-Forest Park" in Sabah State, Malaysia. This activity is one of overseas forestation activities as Fujitsu Group's international environmental contribution activities. More than 10,000 Fujitsu Group employees contributed to the operating fund of this activity, and forestation activity is carried out by an umbrella organization that includes Fujitsu Limited and its group companies and the Fujitsu Labor Union, with support from the Malaysian government, and the Japan International Forestry Promotion & Cooperation Center (JIFPRO).

Malaysia's forests have been decimated by slash-and-burn agriculture, forestry, and palm-oil plantations, and restoring them has become an urgent concern. In Kinarut region of Sabah State, where slash-and-burn agriculture and forest fires have ruined large areas, Sabah Forestry Development Authority (SAFODA) had been trying to pursue forestation as a form of forest remediation, but progress was stymied by a lack of funds. Fujitsu Group cooperates with this activity this time.

Augmenting the contributions of its employees, Fujitsu Group is contributing all the money for the fund and rallying volunteers for the forestation work. SAFODA planned and is implementing a park-wide program and is taking charge of infrastructure and upkeep. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing forestation technology and training technicians, and JIFPRO is assisting the Fujitsu Group in the planning and implementation of the project. Fujitsu provides ongoing funds and implements forestation volunteer activity for three years. After the forestation has been finished, control will be transferred to SAFODA, at which point the Eco-Forest Park will be used for environmental education and eco-tourism.

From January 9 to 11, 72 volunteers, including 45 Fujitsu volunteers from Japan and 27 volunteers from 6 Group companies in Malaysia, have already implemented forestation activity, as the 3rd forestation volunteer activity following the forestation volunteer activity implemented from January 2002.

The forestation project in Malaysia is the 3rd of its kind for the Fujitsu Group, which undertook similar efforts in Thailand in 1998 and in Vietnam in 1999. Fujitsu Group will continue to play an active part in overseas forestation projects and other types of international environmental contribution activities.
