Fujitsu Pledges to Use its Creativity and Technology to Harmonize Human Activities with the Global Environment

Kinarut, January 12, 2002
Focus on Green

Fujitsu (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd today announced that as part of Fujitsu's commitment towards good corporate citizenship throughout the world, Malaysia has been chosen to be the third forestation, "Fujitsu - Malaysia forest of friendship". The Eco-Forest Park of Kinarut, located in Sabah, will be the green home to almost 40,000 trees covering the area of 70 hectares over the next 3-year period.

In a commemorative tree planting ceremony, Tadashi Sekizawa, Chairman of Fujitsu Limited said, "Environmental protection is not only a matter for governments and businesses, but also a social responsibility of each and every citizen in the 21st century. In this regard, the rich natural resources of Malaysia - among the world's greatest environmental assets - are something we all must help to preserve."

"We intend to continue this forestation effort over the coming years. Specifically, we plan to expand from 20 hectares this year to 70 hectares in 2004, creating what will be called the "Fujitsu-Malaysia Eco-Forest Park." he added.

Fujitsu has begun forestation activities toward regeneration of tropical rain forests in Southeast Asia to promote environmental protection and to raise consciousness through environmental activities. Thailand was the first country to come under this activity in 1998 followed by Vietnam in 1999. The Fujitsu-Malaysia Forest of Friendship project is being funded through the contribution and volunteer activities of executives, employees, the workers union and many other people from the Fujitsu Group.

Focus on Green

Focusing on the 21st century challenges facing environmental and health protection, Fujitsu is implementing environmental activities guided by the spirit of the slogan "Green Life21 - Focused on the Green" as the activity principle. Explaining the objectives of this project, Sekizawa said, "This 'Forest of Friendship' is very significant in two ways. First, it is a tangible contribution to global environmental protection. Second, this effort helps enhance the friendship between Malaysia and Japan."

"Sabah and Japan has a long standing relationship, not only in terms of trading and bilateral assistance but also in voluntary services to Sabah by Japanese. And today, with Fujitsu's financial contribution for the tree planting programme in the Kinarut Eco-Forest Park, is further testimony of this relationship and cooperation," commented Yang Berhormat Datuk Tham Nyip Shen who officiated the event today.
