Colour Scanner Push

By Fauziah Muhtar, Computimes 26 August 2004

Committed to further tap the document imaging market, Fujitsu (M) Sdn Bhd has introduced its wide range of scanners, including two models meant for volume and desktop scanning.

It is also sharing its expertise in helping a company venture into document imaging by promoting colour capability.

Fujitsu Computer Products of America’s director and IPG spokesperson Pamela Doyle said colour scanning has started gaining popularity because users usually don’t have to pay a premium to get the colour capability. “What we have to do it to push the need for colour scanning. The function is already there in the machine to take advantage of”.

For desktop scanning, the ScanSnap is offered as a small scanning range meant for individual use. This is the first model for such a category designed to capture new markets.

Unlike most of Fujitsu’s production scanners, the small foot print scanners incorporates ease of use with one-touch scan to PDF, automatic paper size detection, blank page removal, and offers a colour scanning time of four seconds for A4 documents. The Scansnap is priced at RM2,300.00.

Thefi-5650C is an A3 colour scanner designed for production or high-volume scanning, At RM21,0000, it offers a resolution from as low as 50 dots per inch to 600dpi, hence catering to different types of images.

Early in the year, the fi-4860c and f0-5750C models were launched for high volume scanning. To show its commitment to this market, Fujitsu has 16 new models in the pipeline from this year until 2006.

To push the need for document imaging, Doyle said organizations must recognize that they have to protect their valuables in case of data disaster. “ There are so many talks about protecting your data, not only in the digital imaging market but also in storage about how you can protect your data from cradle to grave and at the same time streamline business opportunities to save cost.”

Even though the solutions for digital imaging are getting more sophisticated by the year, what’s lacking is demand for them, which is still very low. This is especially true in the Asia-Pacific region.

Fujitsu Malaysia’s chief executive officer Desmond Chan said most enterprises know the importance of having such a solution in their office, but most still thick they are doing fine in managing their documents. “The awareness is there. Some have started seeing the problem in managing their piled – up documents, but most still prefer to go with the wait-see approach.”

Though Fujitsu has the solution for every digital imaging need and market opportunity is big, the company admits that business is still slow in this category. Nonetheless, the company is targeting to hit 50 per cent growth in sales by end of the year.

Fujitsu’s line of digital imaging solutions is distributed locally by Digital Paper Sdn Bhd.
