Power Saving Initiatives of the Fujitsu Group

To reduce peak power usage by over 15% this summer

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, June 03, 2011

The Fujitsu Group today announced that, to reduce its peak power usage between July and September 2011 by over 15% compared to the previous year, the company will be implementing the following power saving initiatives for offices and factories located in areas serviced by Tokyo Electric Power Company and Tohoku Electric Power.

Main Power Saving Initiatives of the Fujitsu Group

1. Relocation of Fujitsu's Own Servers

Approximately 3,600 of the roughly 10,000 servers used for Fujitsu's development and business operations at the Kawasaki Research & Manufacturing Facilities (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture), Fujitsu Solutions Square (Ota Ward, Tokyo), and Makuhari System Laboratory (Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture) will either be relocated to datacenters outside the regions serviced by Tokyo Electric Power Company and Tohoku Electric Power, or will temporarily suspend usage.

2. Initiatives at Factories and Offices

By reducing the number of production facilities and shifting operations of some manufacturing processes to nighttime, Fujitsu will reduce its peak daytime power consumption without impacting its production schedules or customers' businesses at factories such as the Nasu Plant (Ohtawara City, Tochigi Prefecture) and Oyama Plant (Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture).

Fujitsu will continue pursuing the comprehensive power-saving measures it has already implemented, such as curtailing the use of elevators and lighting, adjusting the temperature of air conditioners, and suspending the use of water heaters and refrigerators at its buildings and offices based in commercial buildings that it occupies as a tenant. Fujitsu will also extend the period of the Japanese Cool Biz workplace attire program within the company to between May and October.

Moreover among other measures, Fujitsu will conserve electricity by employing smart power outlets(1) as well as the peak-shift control functionality of notebook PCs, which automatically switches the machines to battery operations.

At the Numazu Plant (Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture), the factory's power supply will be shifted to a private power generator during peak power usage periods, thereby contributing to the company's efforts to achieve a company-wide peak power reduction of 15%.

3. Conserving Electricity through Changes to Work Schedules

For employees working at Fujitsu facilities including Kawasaki Research & Manufacturing Facilities or Fujitsu Solution Square, two public holidays that normally would be observed in autumn or later will instead be taken as holidays in July or August, which is expected to be the period of peak electricity consumption. Combining these two holidays with a weekend, each location will take turns in observing a four-day long weekend. Employees of divisions with its tenant offices based in commercial buildings will cooperate with electricity conservation measures by individually coordinating their week-long summer vacation schedules. As well, additional discussions will be held with the labor union regarding the implementation of further work schedule changes to conserve electricity.

In conjunction with these initiatives, Fujitsu will make the status of electricity usage visible in real time to monitor electricity conservation and ensure that power consumption during peak periods is limited.

In addition, through efforts to encourage employees to conserve electricity at their homes, as well as support for customer initiatives to conserve electricity through the company's provision of products and solutions having superior energy-efficiency features, Fujitsu is committed to contributing to Japan's overall efforts to conserve electricity.
