LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, a mobile communications method whose specifications were determined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards group. The technology will allow for a maximum downlink transmission speed of over 100Mbps. DOCOMO is positioning its 3.9G technology under the proposed name of "Super 3G".

On October 1, 2009, NTT DOCOMO, INC., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd., and Fujitsu Limited plan on launching their LTE-enabled "LTE-PF" communications platform.
