Fujitsu Selected by NTT DOCOMO as Development Vendor Partner for Implementation of Network Virtualization Technology

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, March 02, 2015

Fujitsu today announced that it has been selected by NTT DOCOMO, Inc. as a development vendor partner for implementing "network virtualization technology," which will improve connectivity during periods of high congestion.

Fujitsu will be working with NTT DOCOMO to provide communications software for virtualization, as well as its management software, as part of the Evolved Packet Core (EPC(1)), the core network that enables transmission of broadband video and voice data on the system that underpins NTT DOCOMO's LTE network. The partners are aiming for the system to go online in March 2016.

Since 2008, Fujitsu has been providing NTT DOCOMO with gateway hardware that runs communications software with S-GW(2)/P-GW(3) functionality. This equipment is distributed globally by Nokia Networks, with Fujitsu providing integration services to NTT DOCOMO.

The communications software to be provided under this arrangement will bring virtualization technology compliant with ETSI(4), the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, to the communications software running on the gateway. This will achieve high availability and reliability of the communications software on the virtualization layer that NTT DOCOMO provides, and will allow a system configuration more flexible to changes in traffic volume, for more efficient operation.

Compliance with ETSI's group (NFV ISG(5)) that promotes virtualization technology is considered important for successful implementation of virtualization technology. Fujitsu will continue to provide products that comply with international standards, as well as integration services.

Fujitsu has a longstanding partnership with NTT DOCOMO, having delivered everything from network-infrastructure systems to mobile handsets, and looks forward to providing high-quality, high-performance products and solutions as part of its total support for the core network.

Comment from Seizo Onoe, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at NTT DOCOMO

"NFV, which has finally moved into its commercial phase, is no longer just a pie-in-the-sky idea. Through multi-vendor initiatives with Fujitsu and other leading vendors in the NFV domain, we look forward to putting NFV to practical use and thereby helping to accelerate the transition to a new era for mobile networks."

For More Information

  • [1] EPC (Evolved Packet Core)

A mobile core network architecture implemented entirely in IP technology that provides support for multiple forms of wireless access, including LTE, along with user authentication, mobile control, charging control, and QoS control.

  • [2] S-GW (Serving Gateway)

For mobile terminals accessing LTE or 3G networks, this is a node for forwarding user data.

  • [3] P-GW (Packet Data Network-Gateway)

A node which connects the EPC and an external network, such as IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), an ISP, or a corporate network.

  • [4] ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute)

A standardization organization established to set telecommunications standards for Europe.

  • [5] NFV ISG (Network Functions Virtualisation Industry Specification Group)

A group created inside ETSI to study issues related to carrier-driven network virtualization technologies, created in December 2012 with carriers as its main members.
