Fujitsu M10 UNIX Server Achieves World-Record Performance Once Again on Two-Tier SAP® SD Standard Application Benchmark with 20% Less CPU Resources

Result underscores that Fujitsu M10, with Oracle Solaris and the highly scalable Oracle Database 12c, is well-suited for large-scale, mission-critical applications

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, February 27, 2015

Fujitsu today announced that the Fujitsu M10-4S UNIX server running Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle Database 12c set a new world record (as of December 2, 2014) on the two-tier SAP® Sales and Distribution (SD) standard application benchmark, achieving 153,050 SAP SD benchmark users(1) with 20 percent fewer CPUs than in the previous world record result achieved by the Fujitsu M10-4S configuration, also on the two-tier SAP SD benchmark(2).

The Fujitsu M10(3) has achieved several world records(4) in the past, namely, in April 2014, on benchmark tests for integer arithmetic performance (SPECint®_rate2006), floating-point arithmetic performance (SPECfp®_rate2006) and memory access performance (STREAM Triad). This new result on the two-tier SAP SD standard application benchmark further underscores that the Fujitsu M10-4S, running Oracle Solaris, together with the scalability of Oracle Database 12c, delivers excellent performance for large-scale, mission-critical applications.

The two-tier SAP SD standard application benchmark running SAP enhancement package 5 for the SAP ERP application 6.0 tallies the number of simulated users that simultaneously access the system and obtains a response within one second. This benchmark was designed with enterprise users in mind, and because it measures the performance of actual systems, which are a combination of business applications, databases and platforms, it can be considered as an effective index for enterprise system platform selection in general, not necessarily limited to SAP ERP.

Measurements were conducted using a Fujitsu M10-4S with 32 SPARC64™ X+ processors developed by Fujitsu running Oracle Database 12c, the latest version from Oracle. These results show that world-record performance can be attained while using 20 percent fewer CPU resources than in the previous world record configuration, which was a Fujitsu M10-4S with 40 SPARC64™ X processors(2).

The multitenant architecture of Oracle Database 12c is especially notable for its efficient use of resources and its outstanding scalability. These results demonstrate how well these features are matched to the Fujitsu M10-4S's CPU core activation and dynamic scaling capabilities.

This latest result is the product of Fujitsu's long and productive collaboration with Oracle and SAP. Based on this ongoing relationship, Fujitsu will continue to help deliver optimal platforms to customers.

Overview of the Fujitsu M10

The Fujitsu M10-4S includes a CPU Activation feature with a granularity of 2 CPU cores, making it easy and economical for customers to match CPU resources to business needs. Its building-block design allows customers to start with a minimal configuration (4U rack-mount chassis with four CPU cores) and incrementally build up to 64 CPUs to easily meet increasing business requirements. This outstanding expandability and flexibility greatly contributes to optimizing customer TCO.
