Fujitsu Enhances Suite of Private Cloud Platform Products with Support for OpenStack

Using open cloud technology to deliver optimized cloud environments to customers

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, May 21, 2014 Fujitsu today announced that it is offering private cloud products and services that support OpenStack, the open cloud environment, to meet diverse customer cloud needs in the era of cloud computing.

To support an open cloud environment, Fujitsu is offering a private cloud platform product based on OpenStack technology and an integrated service catalog management portal product for hybrid cloud environments that combine private and public clouds. The company is also offering support services for building and operating Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, the OpenStack distribution from Red Hat, Inc.

Fujitsu has long been an active participant in Japan's open source software (OSS) community, and it has a wealth of experience deploying cloud systems. With its track record in applying Linux and other OSS to mission critical systems, and with its development and support unit of 700 Japan based people involved in OpenStack and other OSS projects, Fujitsu delivers safe and reliable open cloud environments.

Today, customer cloud use is growing enormously, but the burgeoning variety of different cloud services and systems has led to poor compatibility between clouds and extreme difficulties in migrating applications. As a result, there is increasing interest in OSS that offers a standard Application Programming Interface (API), an essential element in enabling compatible connections between clouds.

Fujitsu has been providing OSS products and services since 1999, when it supported Linux on its PC servers, and since then it has supported the Eucalyptus cloud platform and Apache CloudStack.

With this enhancement to bring OpenStack support to its private cloud products and services, Fujitsu is providing its customers with optimal cloud environments for a variety of usage scenarios (Figure 1).

About the Products and Services

1. Extensive support structure facilitates OSS and OpenStack deployment

With a support organization of 700 Japan based people for OSS, including system engineers for development and front-end interface work, primarily through its OSS Integration Center, Fujitsu provides one-stop support for customers using OSS, covering the complete life-cycle, from the proposal stage to pre-qualification, design, configuration, and support.

2. Fujitsu middleware support for OpenStack

  1. Offering hybrid clouds using OSS to connect a variety of cloud environments
Systemwalker Service Catalog Manager, which integrates the management of cloud service catalogues and is accessed through the cloud portal, has been enhanced to support multi-cloud environments that use the OpenStack API. This enables integrated management of everything from private clouds, including on-premises clouds, to the public clouds of cloud providers.

In the future, Fujitsu plans to offer workload-management software that will automate the process of distributing and operating workloads in cloud environments.
  2. Offering open private cloud platforms using OpenStack
ServerView Resource Orchestrator, which is private cloud platform software for efficiently managing, operating, and using ICT resources, including servers, storage, and networks, has been enhanced to support the OpenStack API. This allows it to be used out of the box with other applications and tools that support OpenStack.

As a first step, it can be used with MidoNet, the network-virtualization solution from Midokura, which CRN Magazine named one of the ten virtualization-technology startup companies to watch.

3. Fujitsu hardware and services support for OpenStack

Fujitsu has strengthened its OSS Cloud Platform Configuration Services that use Fujitsu hardware for OSS support, and in addition to support for Citrix CloudPlatform, Apache CloudStack, and Eucalyptus all of which are available in Japan, as well as SUSE Cloud in Germany, Operations Support Services have been made newly available to support Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform. These enhancements make it possible to build platform environments using OpenStack.
