Fujitsu Releases Free Biosurvey Tool for Organizations Involved in Biodiversity Conservation Activities

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, December 13, 2012

Fujitsu today announced that starting in April 2013 it will make openly available a free biosurvey tool to further aid the efforts of organizations involved in environmental conservation and biological diversity.

To date, the Fujitsu Group has leveraged ICT to support conservation activities in the field, such as biological surveys and monitoring projects. To further expand assistance, Fujitsu plans to make openly available its Mobile Photo System(*1) for conservation efforts. Database storage and the survey tool will be offered free of charge through a cloud environment. By using these services, organizations can efficiently and more comprehensively perform biological surveys that previously required significant labor and time. This, in turn, is expected to help give further momentum to conservation efforts.

Going forward, the Fujitsu Group will continue employing ICT to promote projects that contribute to the environment through field conservation activities.

By contributing ICT-based solutions that address the world's environmental challenges, the Fujitsu Group aims to bring about a sustainable earth and society. In recent years, amid globally deteriorating ecology, the conservation of biodiversity has become an issue of worldwide scale. In light of this, the company has established the Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Action Principles, which state that the application of ICT to preserve biodiversity is a priority measure.

To date, the Fujitsu Group has provided support by employing ICT on the front lines of conservation projects such as the Nationwide Dandelion Survey that used location information to map photographs taken for review and analysis; a Japanese crane conservation project in the Kushiro Wetland area, which involved the remote collection of image data and monitoring; and a study of the Blakiston's fish owl habitat in eastern Hokkaido utilizing an automatic voice recognition program. By inviting organizations to take advantage of the Fujitsu Mobile Photo System, which can improve the efficiency and scope of biological surveys, the Fujitsu Group is working to further expand its support through such technologies.

Fujitsu will be exhibiting its Mobile Photo System that leverages a cloud environment at Eco-Products 2012, to be held from December 13-15 at Tokyo Big Sight.
