Fujitsu Unveils Updated Data Utilization Platform Services

Revamped cloud services portfolio for leveraging big data

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, October 10, 2012

Fujitsu today announced that it will update the lineup and payment structure of Data Utilization Platform Services, the company's cloud service portfolio for leveraging big data. To offer greater convenience and cost performance, the new lineup, which is available starting today, will consist of two service offerings: Data Utilization Platform Services (Standard Edition) and Data Utilization Platform Services (Premium Edition).

The new cloud services provide a platform for gathering and compiling massive quantities of data, as well as performing data analyses and future projections, all while allowing customers to limit upfront investments and adjust resources to accommodate their usage needs. Data Utilization Platform Services (Standard Edition) is being offered for new system test trials, as well as for systems in which users wish to curtail costs through small-scale operations that also allow for future growth. Data Utilization Services (Premium Edition) is intended for large-scale systems involved in full-fledged big data applications.

By employing the new services in a variety of applications—including marketing applications such as product planning using product return rates and social media analysis, product maintenance leveraging product failure forecasting, and energy management, a field where being able to immediately spot abnormalities is crucial—companies can develop new businesses that take advantage of big data, while helping to address the problems they currently face.

Given the drastic changes to the corporate management landscape in recent years, there is a greater need than ever to be able to quickly take steps toward leveraging big data for the purpose of building new businesses and resolving pressing challenges. At the same time, it is rarely the case that patterns for success can be derived immediately using big data. More often, success is achieved through repeated trial and error.

Fujitsu Data Utilization Platform Services are delivered through the cloud, enabling upfront investments to be curtailed while offering a scalable platform that can accommodate customer usage needs, making them perfect for use in big data. The updated lineup allows hassle-free deployment while delivering superior cost-performance, thereby enabling a wide range of uses, from trial applications to business expansion-oriented initiatives.

About the Data Utilization Platform Services (Standard and Premium Editions)

Data Utilization Platform Services serve as the core cloud service offerings of Fujitsu Convergence Services, and customers are able to choose between two packages—Standard Edition and Premium Edition. The service lineup is comprised of Basic services and Optional services, and by combining different Optional services, customers can construct a custom system(1) tailored to their individual patterns of data usage. With the Standard Edition option, customers are able to build a single system, while the Premium Edition enables multiple systems to be constructed. The Standard Edition includes certain user access restrictions on ICT resources, such as virtual CPUs, disks and other hardware, as well as software for processing big data using this hardware. The Premium Edition, however, guarantees scalability of up to 10 times that of the Standard Edition.

Service Overview
  Service Name Service Overview
1 Basic Services (Required) Shared Platform Service Provides operational capabilities for customer systems on the platform, as well as registration functionality for jobs that coordinate data stored by different services. The service also employs a GUI to enable integrated management.
2 Unstructured Data Support Storage Service Provides storage capabilities that can handle unstructured data. With an Internet-enabled environment, users are able to access storage anytime, anywhere (for data collection, storage, reference, deletion, and notifications).
3 Optional Services (Optional) Relational Database Service Provides relational database capabilities that enable access (for data reference and deletion) through the OData protocol(2).
4 Complex Event Processing Service Provides complex event processing functionality that performs real-time sequential analysis of large volumes of data saved on storage devices that support unstructured data and generates alerts for events based on pre-defined conditions.
5 Parallel Distributed Processing Service Provides parallel distributed processing functionality that enables high-speed processing, from simple analysis to sophisticated machine-learning style analysis, for large volumes of data collected on storage devices that support unstructured data.

Service Features

1. ICT resources can be scaled via requests from the service portal

By sending requests from a special service portal, users can substantially shorten the amount of time required to allocate resources from a few weeks or months to a few hours or days. This, in turn, enables speedy deployment of the hardware and software resources necessary for big data processing. In addition, usage-based pricing makes it possible to easily deploy small-scale configurations and then also scale them as needed.

2. User-friendly operations even for first-time users

Thanks to an intuitive configuration process for registering applications that run the platform and creating jobs, even first-time users can develop applications for employing data and perform configuration with minimal effort.

3. Provides storage and an interface enabling users to easily gather and compile unstructured data(3)

The service provides storage and an I/O interface that can efficiently handle unstructured data, such as binary files that lack predefined records and text files with inconsistent record numbers and sequencing. As with conventional relational databases, unstructured data can be freely searched.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing and Availability
Product Name Price (excl. tax) Availability
1 Data Utilization Platform Services (Standard Edition) From 320,000 JPY/month Immediately
2 Data Utilization Platform Services (Premium Edition) From 2,900,000 JPY/month Immediately
  • Pricing is based on usage and will fluctuate accordingly.

  • [1] System

An environment that is independently controlled based on authentication using the customer's unique ID and electronic signature. Refers to a collection of instances and engines created when using the storage and optional services provided in the Basic services.

  • [2] OData protocol

Building on conventional standards including HTTP and JSON, the OData web protocol is a formalized method for performing queries and data operations on structured data. The protocol allows data to be utilized on a variety of platforms (including Java, PHOP, .NET framework, Excel, etc.)

  • [3] Unstructured data

Data that cannot be managed using a traditional database, including social media data from Twitter and Facebook, call center inquiry history data, and videos and still images captured by security cameras.
