Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Employs Fujitsu Cloud in Global Information Sharing Platform

Platform quickly developed using "tsCollaboration" secure information sharing service

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, September 27, 2011

Fujitsu today announced its recent work with Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co, Ltd. to develop a global information sharing platform using Fujitsu's SaaS-type cloud platform-enabled "tsCollaboration" information sharing service. The new platform features a wide range of capabilities for protecting sensitive information—document encryption, printing restrictions, and audit trail management—in order to securely share highly sensitive information, including new drug development data, with offices and subsidiaries outside of Japan. By leveraging the cloud platform at Fujitsu's datacenter in Japan, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma has been able to centralize the management of sensitive information while ensuring robust security.

Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma has pursued global expansion based on the company's mid- to long-term vision, formulated in 2007 and consisting of three strategic pillars, including the expansion of its direct sales capabilities outside Japan. In October 2009, the company established its own sales and marketing framework in the United States through the acquisition of a US-based pharmaceutical company. This, in turn, created greater opportunities for sensitive information to be exchanged with offices and subsidiaries outside Japan, resulting in an urgent need to implement measures to avoid the risk of information leaks.

This is why Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma embarked upon a project to develop a secure global information sharing platform—recently completed and put into full operation—that employs "tsCollaboration," Fujitsu's cloud platform-based SaaS-type information sharing service. Available through Fujitsu's datacenter, which meets world-class security standards, the tsCollaboration service incorporates a wealth of features that facilitate global collaboration, including file management features, notification features, access privileges administration features, and multilingual menu displays.

Deploying the new platform has enabled Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma to ensure robust security when sharing information. At the same time, the cloud platform offered through Fujitsu's datacenter in Japan has made it possible to centralize the management of sensitive information. Moreover, the inherent advantage of cloud platforms allowed the company to quickly construct the system without having to acquire new ICT assets.

Since the initial stages of the project, Fujitsu has been involved in a variety of capacities—from consulting to systems integration, operations, and support. Specifically, Fujitsu has been providing know-how related to content management; delivering technical support for the use of tsCollaboration; developing standard rules relating to security configuration and other operational procedures; offering training and other support to administrators and users; and on the behalf of Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma, is handling operations management tasks, such as the addition and deletion of users.

Going forward, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma plans to gradually expand the deployment of the new platform to global development projects and business units that share sensitive information outside of the company.

By leveraging its tsCollaboration service and content management expertise, Fujitsu will continue supporting the deployment and usage of secure information sharing platforms, both in local/global and internal/external environments. This will work to address information sharing platform-related challenges faced by customers in a wide range of industries, including the pharmaceutical industry.

Pre-Deployment Challenges Faced by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma and the Impact of Service Introduction

Challenge 1: Ensuring security when sharing sensitive information with group companies outside Japan

Utilizing tsCollaboration made it possible to build a secure global information sharing platform in a shorter period of time than had the system been deployed in-house. Information Rights Management (IRM(1)) functions strengthened information leak countermeasures and raised employee awareness of how sensitive information is shared with offices outside Japan.

Challenge 2: Centralized management of sensitive information at the company's headquarters in Japan

The company succeeded in centralizing the management of sensitive information through its use of tsCollaboration, which employs the emergency-tested and highly secure cloud platform at Fujitsu's datacenter in Japan.

Challenge 3: Deployment support, including the development of standard rules and explaining the new platform to group companies

With Fujitsu's deployment consulting services and other kinds of deployment support, the company was able to develop standard rules, including those for folder organization and security configuration processes, in addition to properly and smoothly explaining the platform to group companies. Fujitsu also provided support related to documentation and training.

In developing the new global information sharing platform, Fujitsu worked with Fujitsu System Solutions Limited to handle the system's deployment.

  • [1] IRM:

Information Rights Management, a technology that encrypts and protects highly sensitive information (Microsoft Office documents, PDF documents). By assigning access privileges, restrictions can be placed on opening, printing, watermarking, and copying files, and file access histories can be managed. An IRM option is available with tsCollaboration.
