Fujitsu Upgrades ICT System for Tokyu Enhancing Operational Efficiency and Customer Convenience

Full operations to begin at the reopening of the Tama Plaza store

Tokyo, August 30, 2011

Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Frontech Limited and Tokyu Department Store Co., Ltd. today announced that they have worked together to upgrade Tokyu Department Store's tenant management system for additional customer convenience and operational efficiency. The upgraded system will begin full operations on September 22, 2011, at the company's renovated Tama Plaza store in the Aoba Ward of Yokohama, Japan.

Background

Despite an increase in the diversity of transactions handled and a higher number of shops by lease-based merchant tenants in its stores, Tokyu Department Store operates two separate systems for tenant management: (1) a system for department store-style shops that employs POS registers; and (2) a system for shopping center-style shops that utilizes CAT terminals. However as both management systems were independent from one another, they were incompatible thus resulting in the following:

  • Troublesome process for managing cash register settlement at department store-style shops
  • Restraints on the levels of customer service provided due to limitations on using customer incentive programs(1) such as point cards at shopping center-style shops

Looking ahead to the future of department stores, which are expected to increasingly combine general sales floor areas with leased shops run by merchant tenants, the company was faced with an urgency to upgrade its current tenant management systems to make them compatible with one another. As a result, the new system will allow the following:

  1. Improve customer convenience, by enabling customers to use membership point cards for incentive programs at leased shops operated by merchant tenants, in the same way as general sales areas of department stores.
  2. Streamline the cash register settlement process by integrating the tenant management systems for both department store shops and shopping center-style shops.
  3. Providing more options to prospective tenants by enabling them to use both POS registers and CAT terminals.

While the system has already been undergoing trial operations at the company's stores in Toyoko and Futako-tamagawa since August 2011, its deployment at the Tama Plaza location will be the first time in Japan in which the system will be used at a department store featuring 55 different merchant tenant shops. Tokyu Department Store also plans to deploy the system at its Shibuya Hikarie store, which is scheduled to open in the spring of 2012.

Fujitsu is providing total support for the new tenant management system by leveraging its proven track record. The system's features are as follows:

  1. The system leverages the WebSERVE/Tenant Management software package to provide tenant sales management, agreement management, and rent management features.
  2. By employing the TeamCAT/mini CAT terminal for tenants, multiple processes—including shopping center sales reports, credit card transactions, and point management—can be handled using a single machine.
  3. TeamPoS1000 compact POS register provides a customizable sales layout.

  • [1] Customer incentive programs:

Promotions include added base points for customers depending on their yearly purchases and bonus points during sales campaign periods.
