Fujitsu Launches New Private Cloud Service

Private clouds offered as outsourcing service

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, November 22, 2010

Fujitsu today announced the immediate availability of its new Private Cloud Service, offering private clouds as an outsourcing service that includes server/storage virtualization and automation, as well as a dedicated cloud-computing environment, only in Japan.

This is an outsourcing service in which Fujitsu handles the complete lifecycle of the customer's private cloud, including everything from planning and design for initial deployment to construction, operation and maintenance, as well as decommissioning and disposition. The private cloud's infrastructure environment is combined with a complete range of design, construction, operation, and maintenance services, and allows for on-demand usage with a rate schedule that is proportionate to usage with flat monthly base charges, thus providing customers with a clearer picture of their operating costs and how to optimize them. As infrastructure services include not only servers and storage, but also network capacity and security, the result is a private cloud that is both reliable and scalable with Fujitsu handling, on behalf of the customer, the complex operational-support and trouble-response issues that are particular to cloud computing.

This outsourcing service frees the customer from the various operational management tasks surrounding the constantly evolving and complex private cloud, allowing them to focus on developing business applications and formulating ICT strategies that build on it.

Background

Cloud computing is noted for several advantages: (1) virtualization reduces the number of physical servers, (2) automation enables flexible and dynamic system allocation, and (3) standardization increases reliability. While a growing number of businesses are taking an interest in deploying private clouds, many are understandably put off by the tasks of operating cutting-edge technology, acquiring massive ICT resources including hardware and middleware, as well as building and running complex systems involving interactions between a wide variety of different products.

To address these concerns, Fujitsu has launched its Private Cloud Service, which delivers support in the form of building and operating private clouds. The new service, which builds on Fujitsu's technical expertise and the experience it has gained through more than 5,000 customer deals related to private clouds, is now offered as a private cloud outsourcing service.

About Fujitsu's Private Cloud

Fujitsu's private cloud combines virtualization, automation, and other technologies. Until now, these private cloud services stemmed from ICT systems that Fujitsu built for customers at their locales, and were delivered over the customer's internal network for users to access. Responding to the current elevated needs of customers, Fujitsu will now offer private cloud services from within its own datacenters as well.

With cloud computing, Fujitsu will deliver public clouds, where customers access the Internet to use the virtual ICT system found within Fujitsu's datacenters; private clouds, exclusive to customers; and hybrid clouds, which combine the customer's exclusive private cloud and ICT system with Fujitsu's public cloud.

Service Features

1. Continually enhancing and delivering stable operations of the private cloud

Fujitsu will responsibly handle the complex operational and maintenance tasks associated with the automation and virtualization of the continuously evolving private cloud by utilizing its very own self-developed templates for standard operations. To ensure continuous uptime, service engineers are on duty 24x7 at eight LCM service centers around Japan. A highly-knowledgeable service manager will act as the customer's one-stop point of contact, keeping track of the customer's account throughout its lifecycle, as well as continuously and proactively analyzing usage and improving quality to ensure the continued development of the system.

2. Optimization of ICT investments through on-demand utilization

The design, architecture, operations, and maintenance services related to the private cloud infrastructure environment, will now be available on-demand. Customers can opt for a rate schedule proportionate to usage, while upfront fees can be converted into fixed monthly charges, making operating costs visible. This in turn, enables the optimization of ICT spending while allowing for operational changes and expansions. Specific terms apply to details such as the minimum contract duration and base charges.

3. Optimization of the overall ICT system through visualization

Fujitsu will make visible the customer's current operations, applications, and infrastructure environment –all essential when considering cloud computing– to determine the optimal private cloud environment for the customer. Taking into perspective the option of hybrid clouds, Fujitsu will identify any cost reduction effects after cloud computing is deployed, to fully optimize the customer's overall ICT system.

4. Quick deployment of highly-reliable private clouds

Using as a base its track record of more than 5,000 cloud-related business deals, Fujitsu will utilize its standard design templates created from its extensive experience, design approach taking into full consideration the maintenance of stable operations, service platforms built and formatted in advance, as well as the utmost use of service personnel, to make possible the quick deployment of highly-reliable private clouds.
