Fujitsu Expands Green IT Initiative Globally

Worldwide implementation of Green Policy Innovation project aims to reduce society's CO2 emissions by more than 15 million tons

Fujitsu today announced that it is expanding its green IT initiative, Green Policy Innovation, globally, with the aim of achieving a cumulative reduction in worldwide CO2 emissions of more than 15 million tons over the four-year period from fiscal 2009 through fiscal 2012.

The global expansion of Green Policy Innovation will assist customers and society as a whole in reducing their environmental footprint, and mark a significant step in the realization of the Fujitsu Group's medium-term environmental vision, Green Policy 2020, to support the creation of a prosperous, low-carbon society.

Background

International debate regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has been intensifying prior to the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15). At the most recent Group of Eight Summit, world leaders agreed on a shared international goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and to achieve this goal it is estimated that emissions must be capped by 2020 at the latest. The rapid global adoption of energy-saving products and services and the introduction of other advanced environmental technologies in both developed and developing nations are seen as essential to meeting these goals. As a global IT company, Fujitsu believes it has an important role to play in reducing the environmental footprint of its energy-efficient IT equipment and datacenters as well as in introducing IT solutions throughout industry and society as a whole to reduce the burden of human activities on the environment.

In December 2007, Fujitsu launched its Green Policy Innovation program as a way to assist customers and society as a whole in reducing their environmental footprint. By developing energy-efficient IT and introducing green IT solutions throughout society, the Green Policy Innovation program initially aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by more than a cumulative 7 million tons in Japan over the fiscal 2007-2010 four-year period. In the first two years of the program through fiscal 2008, Fujitsu achieved a reduction of approximately 2.23 million tons of CO2.

In recent years, Fujitsu has accelerated its green IT initiatives in various regions outside Japan by combining the strengths of its worldwide operations and leveraging its technological expertise and environmental program experience. As part of this expansion, Fujitsu has created new global targets for the Green Policy Innovation program, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide by more than a cumulative 15 million tons over the fiscal 2009-2012 four-year period. The global expansion of the program will help customers around the world reduce their environmental footprint while serving as a pillar of the company's medium-term environmental vision, Green Policy 2020.

Areas where Fujitsu is strengthening its commitment to the global environment

Fujitsu Group companies around the world have considerable expertise in developing and deploying green IT solutions. To meet the new global targets for Green Policy Innovation, Fujitsu is striving to reinforce this expertise and enhance the sharing of know-how among Group companies.

  • Energy-efficient IT infrastructure employing cutting-edge technology
    Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. developed the world's first gallium-nitride high electron-mobility transistors (HEMT) that can minimize power loss in power supplies. This is just one of many of Fujitsu's green IT breakthroughs supporting the development of energy-efficient IT equipment. Fujitsu's middleware products complement the hardware by visualizing energy-consumption patterns and providing other optimization and virtualization functions that increase the energy efficiency of IT systems.
  • Outsourcing services delivered from datacenters employing the most advanced green IT
    Fujitsu is enhancing the sustainable design of its datacenters in every region of the world. In the UK, Fujitsu datacenters have begun trial implementation of the latest energy-consumption simulation technology designed to optimize facility and IT equipment operation. In Australia, datacenters boast high-density, hybrid cooling technology which uses recycled chilled water and spatial layout planning to minimize thermal currents.

    In Japan, the most advanced datacenters employ spot air-conditioning systems, thermofluid simulation, multipoint temperature monitoring using optical fibers, and a variety of other technologies. One of the newest technologies to be introduced is a large-scale, fine-grained environmental sensing system comprised of compact, energy-efficient temperature and air flow sensors linked through a proprietary ad-hoc networking technology.

    Fujitsu will continually upgrade the environmental technology in its global datacenters to ensure that its outsourcing services contribute to lowering the environmental footprint of its customers and the facilities themselves.
  • Environmental consulting services to improve customers' environmental management
    Fujitsu Group companies in Japan, Australia and other countries provide consulting services to enhance customers' environmental management. Leading businesses rely on these services to improve their environmental performance. Fujitsu will leverage its global expertise in this area to expand consulting services that reduce customers' environmental burden.

    The servers, storage systems, PCs, networking equipment and other hardware products that Fujitsu sells globally feature world-class energy-efficiency and compact design.       Photonics networking equipment with multilayer convergence architecture, ensuring both high performance and energy efficiency.
    • Sustainable Datacenters with Superior Energy Efficiency
      In the UK, the Fujitsu Group has won Europe's first Tier Ⅲ(1) certification from Uptime Institute for an outsourcing service that uses a sustainable datacenter with free cooling and other innovations. In North America and Australia, Fujitsu datacenters have achieved world-class levels of environmental performance by adopting advanced technology, such as fuel cells and building management systems with state-of-the-art water cooling and recycling systems. In Japan, Fujitsu is operating a sustainable datacenter with technologies that include a datacenter operation management system with energy consumption visualization technology, solar cells to power the facility, as well as a spot air conditioning system which prevents hot spots from emerging inside the datacenter. These technologies contribute to reducing CO2 emissions of the facilities by 40%.
  2. "BY IT": Reducing environmental footprints by deploying IT solutions
    Fujitsu offers green IT services and solutions to manufacturing, transport and other industries as well as for back-office administrative operations. Fujitsu also delivers outsourcing services through datacenters designed for energy-efficiency. These solutions enhance the energy efficiency of customers' businesses and reduce their environmental footprint.

      In the UK, Fujitsu's sustainable datacenters help customers to reduce their CO2 emissions associated with IT equipment and operations by roughly 3,000 tons (the amount that 2,000 homes would produce in one year).
    • SAP AMO (Application Management Outsourcing)
      This service significantly improves the efficiency of SAP operations while reducing customers' environmental footprints. In Japan, customers outsourcing the management and maintenance of SAP applications to Fujitsu can reduce CO2 emissions by 68% (compared with customers' own management).
    • Logistics solutions that raise efficiency and lower carbon emissions
      In Japan, Fujitsu provides a traffic control system which improves the efficiency of vehicle allocation and delivery routes through the utilization of GPS and traffic data. In addition, the traffic control system solution manages idling time and sharp acceleration/slowdown to reduce customers' operational costs and promote safe driving.
      Overall, the solution enables customers to reduce CO2 emissions associated with transportation by 19%.
    • Healthcare solutions that lower service providers' burden on the environment
      In Finland, Fujitsu delivers electronic medical record solutions which eliminate the need for paper-based patient records and promote the efficient exchange of information among healthcare service providers. In Japan, Fujitsu delivers electronic medical record solutions which can reduce CO2 emission by 30% (compared with paper-based record management systems).
    • Environmental consulting services to help customers improve their environmental management
      In Australia, Fujitsu's consulting services deliver savings of greater than 20% on the energy cost and associated greenhouse gas emissions from IT, providing customers with a strategy and full program of initiatives for sustainable business development.
