Fujitsu Employee Wins Lord Kelvin Award

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, October 21, 2009

Fujitsu today announced that Koichi Mori, a recently retired senior manager of the company, received the Lord Kelvin Award from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) at the IEC's General Meeting on October 20 in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The Lord Kelvin Award is presented each year to up to three individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the global standardization of electrical and electronic technologies. The award recognizes Mr. Mori's superior achievements in standardization during his career at Fujitsu, including his activities as chairman of the IEC TC111(1) environmental standardization committee. Since the establishment of the Lord Kelvin Award in 1995, Mr. Mori is the third person from Japan to win the award.

The IEC is an international standards organization that develops and publishes international standards relating to electrical and electronic technologies.

The Lord Kelvin Award was created in honor of The Rt. Hon. Lord Kelvin, the IEC's first president who greatly contributed to the establishment of the commission. It constitutes the IEC's highest recognized award.

Achievements Recognized

Since assuming the chairmanship in 2005 of the IEC TC111 committee for the environmental standardization for electrical and electronic products and systems, Mr. Mori worked to produce two international standards, IEC 62321 (standardized methods for testing hazardous chemical substances)(2) and IEC 62430 (environmentally conscious design for electrical and electronic products)(3) .

Mr. Mori was a passionate promoter of seminars and other activities to raise awareness of the importance of IEC international standards, not only in Japan but throughout Asia.

For more information:

  • [1] IEC TC111

A technical committee that studies general environmental concerns relating to electrical and electronic devices, as well as determining the applicable scope of standards regulating such devices. In line with the European Union's Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Energy-using Products directives (EuP), the IEC TC111 prepares international standards dealing with eco-friendly design, the monitoring of hazardous chemical substances, and information disclosure. Japan's efforts are centered on the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), which has launched a committee within Japan to comply with the directives of TC111. JEITA is focused on deliberating, studying and promoting international standards.

  • [2] IEC 62321 (Standardized Methods for Testing Hazardous Chemical Substances)

An international standard regarding methods for testing hazardous chemical substances, published in December 2008. The standard outlines methods for measuring the density of hazardous materials in compliance with the European Union's Restriction on the use of certain Hazardous Substances directive and similar regulations of various countries. In order to simplify the process of revising the standard in the future, it is being divided into a family of standards, each reflecting a different measurement method.

  • [3] IEC 62430 (Environmentally Conscious Design for Electrical and Electronic Products)

An international standard regarding environmentally conscious design, published in February 2009. The standard regulates the improvement of the environmental performance of products throughout their entire lifecycle (from the utilization of raw materials until final disposal) in accordance with the European Union's Energy-using Products directive. A first draft of a standard by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee is currently under consideration that will bring Japan in line with international standards.
