Fujitsu Enhances IPCOM EX Series of Network Servers

- First all-in-one server with web system service continuity and latest threat countermeasures -

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, April 22, 2009

Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has integrated the Web Application Firewall (WAF)(1), which detects and prevents attacks targeting weak spots in web applications, into its IPCOM EX series of network servers known for protecting corporate networks from viruses and employing load balancing to maintain network service quality. The enhanced models are available starting today.

By incorporating the new WAF security feature responsive to the latest threats affecting web security holes, with the IPCOM EX series of network servers bringing together firewall and load-balancing functions into one, customers can build a safe and secure web system fast and simply. This enhancement allows customers to minimize installation and operating costs, as well as the use of space and cables, and reduce power consumption.

This product is the first in the world to integrate WAF functionality with United Threat Management (UTM)(2) and load-balancing features, streamlining various security measures into one network server.

The use of internet-based web systems have advanced due to their user-friendliness and low operating costs. However at the same time, this has brought a rise in sophisticated forms of cyber-attacks including cross-site scripting(3) and SQL injection(4) targeting the weak spots of web systems and posing a threat to those companies handling customer information as well as confidential information. These attacks can lead to data leaks and website tampering putting a halt to work operations and resulting in a loss of customers' trust.

In response to these new threats, Fujitsu is releasing the enhanced models of its IPCOM EX series equipped with the WAF functionality.

System Overview

Features of the IPCOM EX Series

  1. WAF functionality
The IPCOM EX Series is now equipped with WAF functionality in addition to its existing security features further enhancing web-based security systems against the new threats targeting them.
The series has a proprietary detection engine that performs data and syntax analysis, to autonomously respond to elaborate attacks difficult to counter using signature-based IPS systems(5). As the system works without signatures, there are no annual license-renewal fees. The system is also easy to deploy due to simple Japanese configuration menus and the availability of a training mode.
  2. Lower costs
As the IPCOM EX Series can handle firewall and load-balancing functions, it can be used to configure a system that is less expensive than putting together a combination of single-function servers. As well, it is also simpler to operate than multiple servers, each of which would require training to learn how to operate, in turn further reducing costs.
  3. Environmentally friendly design
As the IPCOM EX Series combines multiple function-based products into a single server, it takes up less space. As well, it reduces the use of electricity and carbon footprint to one-eighth, and reduces operational costs by one half based on Fujitsu's estimates. The server complies with the EU's RoHS directive and is environmentally friendly.

Sales Target

JPY 5 billion for FY 2009 (based on unit sales)

  • [1] Web Application Firewall (WAF)

Functionality that protects web servers from attacks against weak spots in web applications, such as SQL injection. As well, the firewall hides specific kinds of information which normally appear in responses from web servers.

  • [2] United Threat Management (UTM)

Functionality that integrates firewall, virus protection and virtual private network (VPN).

  • [3] Cross-Site Scripting

A security hole that takes advantage of a security vulnerability in web applications and injects malicious script codes from another web system onto the target web system.

  • [4] SQL Injection

Structured Query Language Injection. A security hole that takes advantage of a security vulnerability in web system applications containing databases by injecting an SQL statement leading to data theft or website forgery.

  • [5] Signature-based IPS

Signature-based Intrusion Prevention System. A security system in which attack patterns known as signatures are identified in the network packet and dealt with. It is necessary to update the signatures to counter new types of attacks.
