Fujitsu Unveils New Enterprise 300GB Hard Drives with 4-Platter Design

New MAT and MAU Series Deliver Superior Performance and Capacity for Enterprise Servers, Storage Systems

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, March 08, 2004

Fujitsu Limited today announced the introduction of two new series of 3.5-inch enterprise hard disk drives that deliver superior levels of performance and storage capacity. The MAT series, featuring spindle speeds of 10K rotations per minute (rpm), offers storage capacity of up to 300 gigabytes (GB) with 4-platter design. The MAU series, featuring spindle speeds of 15K rpm, offers up to 147GB in storage capacity. Both are available in three capacity points and two different types of interfaces. The new hard drives deliver the superior levels of performance and reliability required of today's enterprise systems, from servers to storage systems.

Fujitsu's Enterprise 300GB HDD (MAT series)

The MAT and MAU series are successors to the 10K rpm MAP and 15K rpm MAS series respectively. Through improvements in areal recording density, MAT series offers 73GB, 147GB and 300GB in storage capacity, while the MAU series offers 36GB, 73GB and 147GB. Both series are available with a choice of two interfaces, Ultra320 SCSI (U320) or Fibre Channel 2 (FC2).

With the massive increase in transaction and data volumes, today's enterprise servers and storage systems need to deliver greater storage capacities and faster processing speeds. Moreover, they also need a high level of reliability in order to bolster mission critical transactions. Fujitsu's MAT and MAU product variation with accelerated performance and excellent reliability would capture such Enterprise requirements.

Furthermore, interface variation allows greater flexibility for system designers for configuring various enterprise storage environments, including Direct Attached Storage, Network Attached Storage and Storage Area Network.

Commanding the second-highest market share in the global market for enterprise hard drives(1), Fujitsu aims to reinforce its market and technology leadership and positioning with the introduction of the two new series.

  • [2] fluid dynamic bearing motor

A motor that uses viscous oil in its rotational component instead of metal ball-bearings. FDB reduces rotational fluctuations and increases the accuracy of head positioning. As a result, data read/write reliability is improved. In addition, since there is no friction with metal components, it is superior in terms of quietness of operation, impact resistance and durability.
