FHP Introduces 4 Models of High-Definition Plasma Display Panel with Highest Brightness in the World

World's First 55 inch WXGA with e-ALIS Technology

Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited

Tokyo, August 18, 2003

--New A1 series (42 inch, 37 inch, 32 inch) with ALIS(1) Technology
Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited (FHP) announced today that it developed the newest high-definition plasma display panels. (55 inch, 42 inch, 37 inch, 32 inch) 55 inch-WXGA PDP is world's first size that utilizes its newly developed ‘e-ALIS(2)' technology, which features a progressive displaying and the highest brightness level of 1000cd/ m2 .A1 series (42 inch, 37 inch, 32 inch-HD) realizes the highest brightness (42 inch, 1100cd/ m2) with its ALIS technology.

All models realize a beautiful high-definition displaying with newly developed LSI, and achieve over 1000cd/ m2 brightness.

FHP had introduced 42inch high-definition plasma display panel into the market in 1999 with ALIS technology, and added 37 inch, 32 inch in 2001 as a first generation. The newly developed series corresponds to the 3rd generation in the line-up of FHP products, and now FHP provides 4 models line-up by adding 55 inch PDP. 55 inch PDP meets a recent expansion of super large size television market, especially for US market, of over 50 inch products. FHP believes 55 inch is the most suitable product in super large size television market, with making the most of PDP's feature such as self-luminescence and thin profile. By adoption of newly developed ‘e-ALIS'technology, 55 inch PDP has a great advantage against the other 50 inch class PDPs.

A1serires (42 inch, 37 inch, 32 inch) realizes a highest brightness (42 inch, 10% increase over former levels) with its ALIS technology, which will be a main stream of flat panel television market. Moreover, all those 4 models uses 10bit signal processing and newly developed LSI for improving picture quality.

In light of the increased digitalization of household devices in the broadband age-as exemplified by such developments as digital broadcasts, DVDs, the Internet, and CATV-and anticipating that PDPs represent the next generation of wide-screen TV displays, FHP expects that the market size will increase to 1,400,000 units in 2003. In this situation, FHP has a plan to expand its production capacity from current 30k/month to 50k/month in next month, to 70k/month in spring 2004, and to 100k/month in early 2005. FHP continuously focuses on the television use, and holds the top share of world-wide PDP market.

Features of 55 inch WXGA
Newly developed ‘e-ALIS' technology
Expanding the conventional ‘ALIS' to larger size PDP, FHP developed ‘e-ALIS technology. ‘e-ALIS' adopts common electrode on front glass panel, as well as ALIS, while it adopts grid cell structure on back glass panel. Only half of electrodes are required compared with other XGA panels. By adopting the original driving method to this panel structure, FHP realizes a progressive displaying, and also achieves high brightness of 1000cd / m2

This new method alternately addresses odd line and even line during addressing time, and after that, displays all lines at once (progressive displaying). Further, by improving of color temperature (9000K), it allows higher quality of color reproduction for TV images, such as blue sky and white clouds.

Features of A1 series
By improvement of discharge gas, FHP enhanced panel brightness efficiency and made it possible to achieve a higher brightness level of 1100cd/m2 (42inch), 1000cd/m2 (37inch and 32inch), without affecting product life. In addition, by improving of color temperature(9000K), it allows higher quality of color reproduction for TV images such as blue sky and white clouds

Features of all models

  1. By developing new LSI that realizes effective signal processing both for motion and motionless picture, all models greatly reduced noise level caused by error diffusion. Moreover, by enhancing a description of gradation, FHP improved motion picture quality that is feature of plasma television set. It can smoothly display even movie's images. These features make the new PDPs suitable for display devices for household use in the digital broadcast era.
  2. FHP achieves 1.07 billion colors for displaying, by adopting 10bit signal processing to each of R/G/B input signals.
  3. By holding its deterioration with newly developed phosphors, all models extend its life time. (substantially more than 60,000 hours life time for television set use)
  4. All models do not contain Pb in solder. FHP promotes its green products designing required from various restrictions, such as RoHs restriction in EU.
