Fujitsu Develops Spread-Spectrum Clock Generator

--Features World's Lowest EMI and Power Consumption Levels --

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, April 21, 2003

Fujitsu Limited today announced that, in cooperation with Fujitsu VLSI Limited, it has developed a new spread-spectrum clock generator (SSCG) system chip that achieves the world's lowest power requirement and electromagnetic interference (EMI) levels. The new design is being released as the MB88150 Series, with four models available in sample quantities starting today.

Spread-Spectrum Clock Generator

The new series uses digital control to generate the oscillator clock's modulation wave. By more accurately controlling clock frequency modulation, the new design enables a record 19 dB (1/80 power ratio) reduction in EMI noise. Moreover, adoption of CMOS process makes possible power consumption of just 18.2 mW (milliwatts)(*1), the lowest in the world.

This new low-noise design eliminates the need for the additional EMI noise-reduction components used in conventional clock generators. Reduced parts-count will help make possible lower costs and smaller sizes for photocopiers, printers, etc.

Special Features

  1. Significant reduction in electromagnetic interference
Digital PLL circuit technology permits extremely precise frequency modulation and reduces EMI by 19 dB (1/80 power ratio), the world's best noise reduction performance. This is about four times better than existing designs, and about twice as good in relation to voltage.
  2. Low power requirements
A CMOS fabrication process results in a power draw of only 18.2 mW, one-fifth to one-half that of earlier designs.
  3. Low cycle-to-cycle jitter
The new design has cycle-to-cycle jitter of less than 100 ps (picosecond) at 1x frequency multiplier, compared to 200-300 ps for earlier designs, making it suitable for use with high-speed ASICs and other advanced chips.
