Fujitsu Accessibility Standards

Rehabilitation Act

In order to make it easier for people with physical disabilities to use electronic equipment, the federal government has created standards to which federal vendors must comply.

Section 508 Accessibility

A little background...In 1973, an independent federal agency called the Access Board was formed, and was initially chartered with ensuring that federal agencies complied with the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). This act was designed to ensure that people with physical disabilities wouldn't be deprived of the same freedoms enjoyed by people without disabilities. Over the years, the Access Board was successful in making a number of changes to the accessibility standards. In 1998, the board's mission was expanded to include electronic and information technologies.

In December of 2000, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act was amended to require that "when Federal agencies develop, procure, maintain, or use electronic and information technology, Federal employees with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency. Section 508 also requires that individuals with disabilities, who are members of the public seeking information or services from a Federal agency, have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to that provided to the public who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency."
