Fujitsu Enters European Arena with PRIMERGY High Performance Computing

Begins global roll-out of complete HPC solutions in Germany and the UK, France and Italy to follow

Munich/Hamburg, May 31, 2010

Fujitsu today announces that it plans to expand in Europe its x86 PRIMERGY server-based High Performance Computing (HPC) solutions which enable engineers and scientists to achieve breakthrough innovation. Fujitsu, the HPC market leader in Japan, will start the roll-out in Germany and the UK, while the second phase will offer HPC Cluster availability in France and Italy.

A complete HPC stack will be available including rack and blade server systems, middleware and InfiniBand networks, backed by consulting and integration services in the next few months. In addition to computer-aided engineering, Fujitsu is targeting compute-intensive fields where HPC solutions are in increasing demand including bioinformatics, financial risk modeling and the creation of digital content, especially 3D computer graphics.

Jens-Peter Seick, Senior Vice-President x86 Server Product Unit at Fujitsu Technology Solutions says: “Computer simulation and modeling using HPC has become an essential part of the research and development process across many industries. High performance computing is a growing market and we expect that Fujitsu HPC server solutions will account for up to 20 percent of our x86 server business within two years.”

Fujitsu is the HPC market leader in Japan, having deployed the most powerful computing systems. Fujitsu is basing its European offering on more than three decades of HPC experience and innovation, and bolstering the solutions with dedicated new HPC services such as benchmarking, certification and integration.

Masahiko Yamada, President of Technical Computing Solutions Unit at Fujitsu Limited says:”When expanding the HPC business globally, Fujitsu is going to leverage the extensive and long-standing experience gained in the Japanese market. We believe that our innovative and highly reliable HPC solutions can help our customers to support their customers in creating real business value.”

Customers can draw on the global network of Fujitsu competence centers and a wide range of partners. Fujitsu is offering HPC solutions direct from Fujitsu and via specialized partners with a deep understanding and knowledge of HPC applications and the middleware stack, such as the German firm ICT AG.

At launch, Fujitsu is offering a rich choice of HPC platforms. These include the recently introduced PRIMERGY CX1000, a highly-scalable cloud server infrastructure platform, and the single-chassis dynamic server infrastructure PRIMERGY BX900 system. Enterprises looking for the shortest-possible deployment timeframe can select PRIMERGY RX200 rack servers as the building blocks for their HPC clusters.

The first of these PRIMERGY HPC systems have already achieved Intel® Cluster Ready certification, guaranteeing customers pre-tested system interoperability and making it easier to pair cluster systems with applications to form tightly-integrated solutions.

"Fujitsu is clearly delivering compelling High Performance Computing solutions in Europe with the PRIMERGY product family based on the Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series. We’re happy to see that by leveraging Intel Cluster Ready Fujitsu was able to expedite delivery of the PRIMERGY RX200 S6 to the market,” says Boyd Davis,

General Manager Data Center Group Marketing & Vice President Intel Architecture Group.

HPC Cluster boosts technical university’s computer modeling power

One of Fujitsu’s first European HPC customers is the RWTH University in Aachen, Germany, one of the country’s leading technical universities, with some 30,000 students and 450 professors. To provide a much-needed boost in the computing power for such an IT-focused environment, the University’s Center for Computing and Communication turned to Fujitsu to provide an HPC cluster.

Fujitsu and implementation partner Unicorner installed a cluster made up of 250 compute nodes, which operates under Linux and Windows HPC stacks. The system is equipped with a high-performance non-blocking InfiniBand network allowing it to be used for parallel computer simulation operations, giving multiple users interactive access to applications.

Fujitsu has also created a dedicated HPC solution team of several hundred people taking responsibility for the Research and Development HPC solutions, plus mid-line system design, customer deployment and technical support.

International Supercomputing Conference 2010

Fujitsu will participate in this year’s International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Hamburg, Germany, on May 30-June 3, where the company exhibits a choice of HPC solutions at booth 640.
