Fujitsu Laboratories of America Introduces API Learning Technologies to Manage the Rise of API Economy

A Machine Learning-based technology that helps software engineers to efficiently search APIs, validate APIs, and generate API mashups

Fujitsu Laboratories of America Inc.

Mountain View, CA, October 11, 2017 – At the Fujitsu Laboratories Advanced Technology Symposium, Fujitsu Laboratories of America today announced the availability of new technology to manage the exponential growth in publicly available APIs. The newly developed platform uses various methods of machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to return the appropriate API sets in response to user requests. Additionally Fujitsu Laboratories of America has developed an ensemble of novel technologies referred to as “API Learning” which enables a software developer to easily use heterogeneous APIs. These technologies enable a machine to automatically generate machine-readable format of API functionalities from API documentation, understand variety of API descriptions, validate extracted information through automatic API validation, and finally recommend API mashups for a specific purpose.

“The rapid growth and dependence on open source software (OSS) has created the need for effective API management tools’, said Masayuki Kato, CEO, Fujitsu Laboratories of America. “In the future, through our new platform our customers will have a seamless and effective way to leverage APIs to build new applications and reduce time to market”.

Application Programming Interface (API) exposes data and functions of a software application to third-party users. In digital business, API economy is one of the key points for determining the value of provided services. With the rise in number of APIs in the market, understanding each API endpoint manually is not only labor intensive but also an error prone task for software developers. In addition, APIs may be revised or updated regularly, creating significant overheads for software developers to keep track of all changes. Finally, due to the complexity of understanding the sheer number of APIs, software developers often overlook the power of API combinations (i.e., API Mashups).
The presented technology introduces automated validation of APIs that minimizes human intervention. It also keeps track of API changes, including endpoints and descriptions by validating endpoints periodically. The results of automated API validation could further improve the performance of machine learning based information extraction. The technology exploits multiple NLP methods, machine learning based models, and web automation techniques to automatically resolve endpoint parameters.
