Fujitsu Laboratories of America develops advanced technology for JSON data compression

Technology enables 100% speed improvement in data exchange over conventional methods utilizing the same processing resources

Fujitsu Laboratories of America Inc.

Sunnyvale, CA, June 30, 2015 Fujitsu Laboratories of America today announced new technology for efficiently compressing JSON data. This new technology can efficiently compress JSON data down to about half the size of conventional methods including Gzip, without sacrificing processing efficiency.
Nowadays, people are increasingly dependent on big data to streamline their operation across multiple business domains. Collected data is often transformed and transferred across departments and organizational boundaries over the Web for further analysis and/or monitoring. In addition to XML, JSON is becoming popular as the data exchange format on the Web.
The new technology developed by FLA enables efficient JSON data exchanges. Our own internal experiments have shown a significant improvement in compression ratio over GZip in compressing data of sizes as large as several mega-bytes or more, without incurring any additional processing cost.
“With this technology, performances of applications involving large JSON data can be significantly improved without adding or upgrading hardware, “ said Yasunori Kimura, President and CEO of Fujitsu Laboratories of America. “This will enable fast exchanges of data within the enterprise while help maximize the investment in existing hardware.”
When applications exchange large volume of data, compressing the data using tools such as GZip can significantly improve application performance. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has defined Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) technology as a standard to allow for much more efficient data interchange than GZip. However there is lack of an equally efficient compression technology for JSON data. The new technology developed by FLA addresses this gap.
