Fujitsu Announces Innovative New Power Management ICs for Energy-Harvesting Applications, Will Help Reduce Carbon Footprint

–MB39C811 and MB89C831 are the Industry’s First Standalone Devices to Derive Energy from Multiple Natural Sources

Fujitsu Semiconductor America (FSA) today introduced two new power management ICs (PMICs) with converters designed to harvest energy from solar, thermal, vibrational and other sources for use in a variety of applications.

The new energy-harvesting products are the MB39C811 and MB89C31. Each is designed for use in systems that derive energy from solar, thermal, or kinetic sources, and store the energy for use in autonomous devices or products such as those used in wireless sensor networks, wearable electronics products, and similar applications.

MB39C811 is Industry’s First Device to Derive Energy from Multiple Sources Simultaneously

The MB39C811 is an ultra-low-power buck converter with a dual, full-wave bridge rectifier compatible with multiple energy harvesters. It is the industry’s first standalone device to derive energy from solar, thermal and vibration sources at the same time.

The MB39C811 integrates a dual, full-wave bridge rectifier with a low-loss, high-efficiency converter for energy harvesting. This complete solution is optimized for high-output impedance energy sources such as piezoelectric transducers or microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS). The MB39C811 has eight preset output voltages ranging from 1.5V to 5V, and covers continuous output current up to 100mA. Quiescent current is only 1.5 uA. It is the industry’s first device capable of harvesting energy simultaneously from both light and vibration sources using a single PMIC device.

The MB39C831 is a highly efficient boost converter for solar or thermal energy harvesting with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to efficiently charge a Li-Ion battery. The device can charge into a Li-ion battery with a single solar cell and a multi-junction solar cell or thermal electric generator (TEG). The device can extract the maximum power point of the power source and safely charge Li-ion batteries using its protection function. The MB39C831 starts up from as low as 0.35V and operates at very low voltage, making it ideal for applications using a single solar cell. Its MPPT function automatically tracks changes in the optimal operation values and adjusts the output accordingly, enabling highly efficient energy extraction and supply.

Energy harvesting is the process of collecting minute amounts of unharnessed energy from the surrounding environment, including light, heat and vibration, and converting these to electricity. Both new devices provide all the benefits of industry-leading environmental products.

“Our two new PMICs are certified by Fujitsu as ‘Super Green’ products, meaning that they have superior environmental characteristics compared to other products on the market,” said Takuya Okajima, senior manager of applications engineering. “The devices will significantly further the successful commercialization of energy-harvesting technologies and contribute to Fujitsu’s goal of helping to reduce the global carbon footprint.”

The MB39C811 and MB39C831 will be available by mid-June in 40-pin QFN packages.
