Fujitsu PRIMERGY CX1000 Platform Rewrites Cloud Computing Price-Performance Rules

Revolutionary Fujitsu Scale-Out "Cloud eXtension" Architecture Does Away with Need for Hot Aisles

Fujitsu America Inc.

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) --, March 17, 2010

Fujitsu ( today introduced in North America the revolutionary PRIMERGY® Cloud eXtension server. The PRIMERGY CX1000 server provides unprecedented levels of scale-out capability, ideal for cloud computing environments, and sets new standards in data center economics by optimizing the operating cost drivers of power, heat and space.

The PRIMERGY CX1000 server is designed from the ground up to deliver as much computing power as possible per square foot, at the lowest-possible price, packing 38 server nodes into a single rack to provide a minimum savings of 20 percent in power and cooling in comparison to a standard rack server assembly.

News Highlights

  • The PRIMERGY CX server line adds a new class of server to the current Fujitsu x86 line-up of PRIMERGY blade (BX), rack (RX) and tower (TX) models and serves as a cornerstone of the overall Fujitsu Infrastructure-as-a-Service strategy, taking Fujitsu another important step forward toward a service-oriented, platform-based delivery model for IT services.
  • With the PRIMERGY CX1000 server, Fujitsu also unveiled a creative new Cool-Central™ architecture that saves additional space by removing the need for the data center "hot aisle" – the space behind racks where hot air is blown out of the back of running servers. Instead, the PRIMERGY CX1000 server features an internal chimney that funnels hot air through the top of the standard-sized rack. This allows for rows of PRIMERGY CX1000 racks to be placed back-to-back, resulting in floor-space savings of up to 40 percent. This revolutionary approach translates into significant carbon reductions for data center operators.
  • Fujitsu has embarked on a global Green ICT initiative, Green Policy Innovation, aimed at helping customers achieve their environmental commitments. Breakthrough technologies like the PRIMERGY CX1000 server, designed to dramatically reduce environmental footprints, will be an important part of achieving this mission.
  • The PRIMERGY CX1000 server takes a back-to-basics approach to individual components, doing away with the need for full system redundancy and hot-pluggable components. Within massive scale-out applications and fully-virtualized system environments, services running on non-responding servers are simply switched by software from one server to another and restarted.
  • Built using off-the-shelf components, the PRIMERGY CX1000 server incorporates a simple design concept that allows for easy replacement of individual server nodes in case of a system failure. Faulty components can simply be replaced offline. Adding and removing nodes is a snap thanks to the PRIMERGY CX1000 server’s shared infrastructure – with centralized power distribution and cooling.
  • The PRIMERGY CX1000 server features the latest Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series, which delivers unprecedented levels of processing power.
  • Pricing and availability: PRIMERGY CX1000 can be ordered now and will ship at the end of this month. Pricing starts at $89,866 U.S. The PRIMERGY CX1000 is backed by comprehensive support from the Fujitsu worldwide services organization, providing a one-stop shop for the full planning, design, implementation and management of complex IT infrastructures. Thanks to a global team of IT services professionals, Fujitsu delivers holistic IT solutions.

Richard McCormack, SVP, Server & Solutions Business, Fujitsu: "Cloud computing demands have caught data center operators in a vicious circle of performance and cost. Today, the battles are being won and lost on the plains of price-performance. With the PRIMERGY CX1000 server, we’re introducing a solution that goes beyond the scale-out performance envelope of rack servers – without blowing budgets – which is especially compelling in cloud computing environments.

"New products require new services, and new services are realized by new products. The PRIMERGY CX1000 server introduces a new hybrid approach ensuring that we meet every customer’s unique demand: the cost efficiency gains from implementing standardized services such as IaaS, plus the flexibility to add customized offerings such as managed services."

Raejeanne Skillern, Director of Cloud Computing Marketing, Intel Corporation: "Intel and Fujitsu have a long and successful history of partnering to bring valuable combinations of Intel-based PRIMERGY servers to the IT server marketplace. With the launch of the new Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series, codenamed Westmere-EP, Intel welcomes the next generation of broad server offerings from the Fujitsu PRIMERGY product line, and Intel is especially delighted with the new Fujitsu PRIMERGY CX1000 server."
