Fujitsu Announces Another Successful Quarter for Hard Disk Drive Shipments

Company Introduces First Perpendicular Recording Hard Disk Drive; Continues to Build Momentum in Enterprise and Mobile Shipment Results

Fujitsu Computer Products of America

Sunnyvale, CA, November 01, 2006

Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced its hard disk drive shipment results for the third calendar quarter. During this timeframe, shipment of Fujitsu enterprise hard disk drives (HDDs) exceeded 1.8 million units, resulting in an impressive 50 percent surge over the same period last year. On the mobile side, shipment of HDD products reached 5.54M units, an increase of nearly 12 percent from the same quarter in the previous year.

Fujitsu offers a comprehensive enterprise product line featuring both 3.5" and 2.5" form factors, and continues to be a strong advocate of key interfaces such as Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Fibre Channel (FC). The SAS market is steadily expanding, and Fujitsu remains at the forefront in driving this growth. Nearly 28 percent of all Fujitsu enterprise hard disk drives shipped during the third quarter utilized SAS technology.

As one of the pioneers in the promotion of Serial technology, Fujitsu has paved the way in the mobile market as the first HDD manufacturer to deliver a 2.5" Serial ATA (SATA) product. Today, nearly two-thirds of all Fujitsu mobile units shipped feature the SATA interface. With the expected continuation of this trend as well as the anticipated growth in the mobile market for notebook and consumer electronics (CE) applications, Fujitsu expects to remain a key player in this industry.

In August 2006, Fujitsu also announced its first 160GB 2.5" SATA mobile hard disk drive to feature perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. The hard disk drives’ 80GB of storage per platter is among the highest in the industry with a 5400RPM spindle speed. With notebook manufacturers beginning to require products with 160GB, Fujitsu is entering the market at an ideal time to meet this demand.

"We’re extremely pleased to see the rapid transition to Serial technology in the marketplace alongside the continued growth of our enterprise and mobile shipments," said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "With the introduction of our 160GB 2.5" SATA perpendicular product as well as our continued focus toward innovative technology, we foresee a strong finish to the end of the year."

"Three major transitions characterize the HDD industry in 2006: A shift to serial interfaces for mobile 2.5" and enterprise-class HDDs, the ramp of PMR technology, and a migration to 2.5" enterprise-class HDDs," according to John Rydning, IDC’s Research Manager for Hard Disk Drives. "Fujitsu’s participation in all three of these trends helped the company to achieve record mobile 2.5" and enterprise HDD shipments for the 2006 third calendar quarter."
