Smart Energy

Energy, without a doubt, is one of the most important issues in the 21st century. With the increasing fossil fuel costs and the awakening of environmental consciousness, the era of cheap energy has ended and people are looking for cleaner and safer energy. Power industries are looking for ways to improve efficiency and enhance system stability in order to provide reliable and competitive services to customers. An obvious trend shows that information and communication technology (ICT) will play an increasingly important role in the power industry. Here at Fujitsu Laboratories of America we are exploring research in the areas of Smart Grid and Smart Energy. Smart Grid built on top of advanced communication technology brings information about power systems to utilities and end users to achieve higher energy efficiency and energy savings. In addition, various kinds of Smart Energy applications intelligently operate equipment to reduce the energy cost of users while maintaining users' productivity.

Remote Monitoring PlatformTremendous amounts of new information brought from Smart Grid poses a huge challenge for utilities not only on data management but also on how to retrieve useful information from Big Data. The growing Smart Grid services in the clouds, which alleviate the burden for utilities, represent a huge business opportunity. Moreover, power systems of the future will incorporate more renewable energy sources. With the volatile generation from renewable sources, utilities will face more challenges to meet the supply and demand balance. We believe all of these challenges can be resolved through the assistance of ICT. Our current research includes the following areas:

  • Smart energy data analytics, such as forecasting demand and renewable generation
  • Optimal control of equipment to achieve energy efficiency
  • Demand response
  • Cybersecurity for energy management systems (EMS)

One of our missions is to bring advanced technologies into standardization community and support interoperability. Our team has actively participated in many standards organizations, such as OpenADR alliance, IEC, and IETF. We have co-authored multiple international standards, including a networking protocol used in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) at IETF – RFC 6971: “Depth-First Forwarding (DFF) in Unreliable Networks.” We completed the design and development of an OpenADR 2.0b system, the latest version of the ADR (Automated DR) standard, and received the World's First OpenADR 2.0b Certification.
