Fujitsu Strikes Gold With AngloGold Ashanti

London, April 11, 2012

Global gold mining company, AngloGold Ashanti, has enlisted Fujitsu to support the transformation of its existing disparate ERP systems into a single, global SAP system. Under the terms of the five-year contract, Fujitsu will host and manage the company’s global ERP system, from a data centre in the UK. The move will see AngloGold Ashanti standardise business-use rules across IT applications to enable workload optimisation and integration – ultimately streamlining business processes to create greater efficiency and reduce IT costs.

Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti has 20 mining operations in 10 countries across four continents, and a number of exploration projects and offices in other locations. As a result of merger and acquisition activity over the years, the company has found itself with fragmented information systems over a wide geographical spread. The company identified the need to overhaul its existing ERP system. Its aim was to work with a partner that would not only ensure availability and security – but had a proven track record in delivering projects of a similar scale.

“This is an important, strategic project for AngloGold Ashanti – and one that we expect to deliver significant business impact,” said Andrew Crocker, CIO, AngloGold Ashanti “Following a comprehensive review of the market, Fujitsu emerged as a clear leader. Not only did it meet all the given criteria, but beyond that, gave the evaluation team absolute confidence that this type of project was second nature. It was crucial to find a partner that we could rely onto ensure that the system was always available and highly secure.”

The project is currently in its design phase, with deployment planned for early 2013. Starting in South Africa, the global SAP system will be deployed across all the countries where AngloGold Ashanti operates.

Jon Wolfe, business unit director at Fujitsu UK & Ireland, commented: “The objective here is to create a flexible, scalable, efficient and secure system, that provides AngloGold Ashanti with visibility into, and control over, its various operations as well as helping to reduce IT costs. At this stage in the implementation phase, we are well on our way to achieving that – and looking forward to a long and successful partnership with AngloGold Ashanti.”
