Fujitsu Selected by BT for 21st Century Network

Fujitsu announces today that it has been formally selected as a preferred supplier by BT for its 21st Century Network. BT has announced that it expects to conclude contractual agreements with named preferred suppliers over the summer.

April 28, 2005

BT is one of the first major global operators to announce an investment in next-generation network technology, with the objective of rationalising a service and network infrastructure that has evolved over many years. Fujitsu heralds this announcement as a key development for the global telecommunications industry as a whole, representing the first implementation of a common network that will allow voice and data services to co-exist in a packet-based infrastructure.

Shigeyuki Unagami, Managing Director of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, commented: "We are delighted to have been selected as one of the key preferred suppliers in the access domain for BT's 21st Century Network, working closely with BT from the very early stages of this programme over two years ago. With our experience as the largest supplier of access network technology in the UK, we have been able to take a proactive approach, providing intellectual support, as well as offering a highly cost-effective solution for BT's requirements.

"Fujitsu's award-winning GeoStream Access Gateway is a product that has consistently evolved in line with BT's MSAN (multi service access node) strategy. This exciting new opportunity with BT will enable us to apply our technological, logistic and manufacturing base here in the West Midlands to ensure the continuing rapid development and deployment of our technology. We are delighted that our investment and innovation in advanced access network products for BT will ensure ongoing growth and investment in the United Kingdom."

BT's 21st Century Network is an important evolution, providing support for the existing features and services enjoyed by BT's customers, as well as putting in place the capability for advanced next-generation services that will deliver greater flexibility, features and mobility. BT's investment in its 21st Century Network will set new world standards for advanced broadband telecommunications services, underlining the United Kingdom's leadership in the adoption of next-generation technology with resultant economic and social benefits for the country as a whole.

At the heart of the Fujitsu Access portfolio, the GeoStream Access Gateway has recently received two major industry awards - the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2005, as well as the 2005 ISPA Best Hardware Award. GeoStream Access Gateway provides a common platform for the support of fibre and copper terminations across a wide range of existing and next-generation services to end-users. Fujitsu was one of the first equipment providers to demonstrate H.248 voice interoperability in the UK, with the cost-effective ability to provide broadband alongside voice services, on a common network infrastructure, representing a key part of the BT 21st Century Network vision.

About Fujitsu's GeoStream Access Gateway

Deployed with an installed capacity of over 3 million lines, Fujitsu's GeoStream Access Gateway is a Multi-Media Service Access technology platform, which enables end users to receive high-capacity broadband services. Multiple services can be delivered simultaneously, from fast Internet access and video-on-demand, to voice telephony using VoIP. Inherently scalable, the modular technology has been designed to drive down the cost-per-line to a minimum, and to be as cost-effective as possible for an ISP or network operator, whether servicing many thousands of broadband subscribers from a busy urban exchange or delivering broadband to small, remote rural communities.

In addition to its scalability economies, the design offers further cost-saving potential through its lower energy consumption compared to previous technology, and through its support for a dynamic power management facility that can tailor power usage to traffic demands. The installed system also has a smaller footprint than previous-generation technology, allowing more efficient use of valuable exchange space. The multi-standards capability of the GeoStream Access Gateway offers support for the widest breadth of protocols, including ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, SDSL, VDSL, Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, PON, WiMAX and SDH - all from the same platform. Representing Fujitsu's next-generation Multi-Service Access Node, the GeoStream Access Gateway can support many thousands of users on a single ATM/Ethernet network interface, and is arguably the world's most advanced DSL platform, designed to provide operators and service providers with leading-edge cost-efficient technology.

With its design and manufacture located in the UK, the product's local focus enables Fujitsu to offer European operators considerable flexibility in design development and supply management, with the company's Birmingham-based engineering facilities representing the global centre of Broadband product excellence for the entire Fujitsu group.
