Fujitsu Demonstrates MSAN Technology Leadership at 21st Century Communications World Forum

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe shows the world's most advanced DSL platform - the modular, multi-service GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000

January 19, 2005

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, will be showing its leadership in the field of Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) technology at the 21st Century Communications World Forum, hosted by BT at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel from 21-24 February. On Stand No. 2017, Fujitsu is showing its advanced modular, multi-service GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000, the company's next-generation MSAN that is capable of supporting thousands of broadband users on a single ATM/Ethernet network interface. Currently the world's most advanced DSL platform, GeoStream Access Gateway provides operators with the optimum cost-effective technology on which to build 21st Century networks.

The latest addition to the GeoStream Access Gateway portfolio is Fujitsu's Integrated linecard sub-system - GeoStream Access Gateway IV-LCSS - demonstrating Fujitsu's NGN technology evolution. The new IV-LCSS supports up to 64 subscriber lines, and allows operators to provide conventional telephony services as well as broadband, via a common integrated platform installed at a local exchange. Ensuring a seamless migration from legacy voice platforms, Fujitsu's GeoStream Access Gateway IV-LCSS offers full compliance with H.248, as demonstrated in the Multiservice Switching Forum 2004 interoperability testing last October (GMI 2004). The IV-LCSS represents a key component in Fujitsu's next-generation Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN).

Fujitsu has achieved industry-leading operational flexibility and scalability with its GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000, incorporating a range of cost-saving attributes that help to drive an operator's cost per line down. At the event, it will be demonstrating the MSAN's ability to handle VoiP services to maximum efficiency over fibre, DSL and a soft client linked to BT's Broadband Voice service currently deployed by Fujitsu and MetaSwitch for BT in the United Kingdom. In addition, Fujitsu will also be showing video streaming over both copper and fibre on the GeoStream Access Gateway, as well as access to Video on Demand services.

In addition to the exhibition, Fujitsu is an active participant in the accompanying conference programme, with Dr Toshitaka Tsuda, Member of the Board, Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, taking part in the Industry Overview Panel on The Digital Networked Economy: Benefits, Opportunities, Strategies, and Challenges; Director of Product Management, Simon Rees, chairing the Landline (POTS) Replacement - End of the World or a New Beginning session and Chief Architect Ian Masson chairing Evolving the Multi-Service Converged Network Edge.

Overview: GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000
Fujitsu's modular, multi-service GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000 offers a powerful combination of flexibility and scalability, with multi-layered potential for maximising an operator's opportunities for revenue generation and cost saving. The single-solution approach of the Hub 1000 offers scalability all the way from small installations of 1000 lines, up to the largest exchanges of over 16,000 lines. This impressive DSL capacity brings particular benefits for PSTN migration in larger installations, enabling capital investments in exchange equipment to be spread across the maximum number of subscribers. In addition to its scalability economies, the design of Fujitsu's Hub 1000 offers further cost-saving potential, with the solution achieving lower energy consumption than existing technology, and with support for a dynamic power management facility that can tailor power usage to traffic demands. The installed system also has a smaller footprint than previous-generation technology, allowing more efficient use of valuable exchange space.

Fujitsu's innovative solution also brings increased levels of aggregation to the broadband arena and, along with the larger switching capacity and higher bandwidth interfaces, the Hub 1000 offers operators dramatically enhanced functionality. It combines a 40Gbit/s data capacity, with support for the full range of residential DSL services, as well as current and proposed business services, and offers the high resilience necessary for PSTN migration. It also supports evolution to PON architectures, which will become increasingly important as fibre is deployed deeper in the network, and has the potential for supporting "unbreakable-access" operation within the IP layer.

Key to Hub 1000's flexibility is its backplane-less modular architecture, with the traditional use of a backplane being replaced by cable interconnects between the line modules and the central switch hub. The architecture enables the straightforward migration of DSL technology, as well as the evolution of processing, switching and network interfaces, while ensuring that the installed base of line modules can be retained. This approach has a significant beneficial effect on whole-life costs, as the line modules represent a major part of the investment.

Fujitsu's backplane accepts multiple line-card types, which can be operated in any combination, with hot-swap plug-ability avoiding service disruption during upgrades. With line-card types ranging from ADSL and SHDSL to VDSL, the Hub 1000's capabilities also encompass Integrated Voice cards that support PSTN services, while providing a simple migration path to broadband voice. Supporting multiple backhaul protocols, including STM4, STM1, E3 and E1IMA, the design of the Hub 1000 also accommodates Gigabit Ethernet. All of the system's optical interfaces can be offered in short- or long-haul variants, giving the maximum level of interfacing choice for Multi-Service Access Node exchanges.
