Fujitsu Consolidates Strategic European Positioning with Appointment of new Operations General Manager

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe appoints Eric Mitchell as General Manager of European Operations in strategic consolidation

June 22, 2004

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, is strengthening its European presence with the appointment of a new European Operations General Manager - Eric Mitchell. The new position involves responsibility for France, Portugal and Northern Ireland, reinforcing Fujitsu's existing operations and strategic growth objectives in these territories.

Commenting on Fujitsu's expanding European market activities, General Manager of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe, Andy Stevenson commented: "We have just completed one of our most successful trading years to date, consolidating our position as the UK's leading broadband supplier. As we move into our new financial year, we are focusing on delivering a new blend of converged IT and telecommunications solutions as part of a fully managed service proposition for our customers.

"The creation of a new European Operations role is part of this process. This market approach is further reflected by the extensive growth of our French business, involving the secondment of senior technical staff and an expansion of our Paris-based facility. France represents an important market for us, and we are supporting this proactively. Our Portuguese company has moved into a financially stronger position, with the introduction of our multi-service GeoStream Access Gateway solution into Portugal. Fujitsu's growing telecoms equipment repair refurbishment business in Northern Ireland is also doing well, providing an important and cost-effective service to a growing customer base, including BT and Lake Communications. We are confident that Eric will bring his expertise to bear as European Operations General Manager, providing an all-important strategic control element to our business interests in the coming year."

Eric Mitchell spent the past two years as General Manager of Fujitsu's wholly-owned Portuguese subsidiary, Fujitsu Elotecnico Telecommunications SA. In his new post, he is responsible for a total of some 150 staff, and will be based at Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe's UK headquarters in Birmingham. He views the task of building up new business opportunities in Europe with enthusiasm, saying: "Fujitsu is in a very strong position in Europe, thanks to the success of our broadband technology. This is underlined by the launch this month of the latest version of our multi-service access node - GeoStream Access Gateway - which incorporates our third generation DSLAM technology in the world's most advanced DSL platform, capable of handling several thousand DSL channels from a single hub. We have a tremendous opportunity to extend our dominant UK market position into other areas, and it will be my focus to support our businesses in France and Portugal, and to work with our Antrim operation to open up new business avenues. I am looking forward to what promises to be a demanding yet rewarding role, and am confident that within our European Operations team, we will bring a new co-ordinating role that will benefit all parts of our business."

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe is the leading provider of broadband solutions in the UK, with more than 1.5 million lines deployed to date. The company's broadband expertise provides the cornerstone of the Fujitsu Group's advanced access node technology, with Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe leading the development of the company's global broadband solutions.

Fujitsu's GeoStream portfolio comprises a set of flexible, reliable and powerful network elements that can be used to construct an end-to-end communications network, capable of delivering the widest range of services to end-users. A key part of Fujitsu's Next Generation Network strategy, the GeoStream Access Gateway is a scaleable, multi-service platform, interfacing to the widest range of access technologies and providing aggregation for IP, Gigabit Ethernet, Ethernet, ATM, TDM and POTS services over copper, direct fibre, PON and wireless.
