In the late 1990s, the telecommunications industry, which had continued to expand with the rapid spread of the Internet, fell into a slump with the bursting of the IT bubble. The resulting 75% market decrease was unprecedented. Given the situation, Fujitsu refined its products and formed product alliances while enhancing collaboration between basic research and manufacturing.
In 2000, Fujitsu released its FLASHWAVE4500 optical transmission system. The system integrated several previous devices, could configure a number of ring-type transmission lines at the same time, and had a built-in LAN. A lower-capacity version, FLASHWAVE4100, was added in 2001, creating the FLASHWAVE series. The FLASHWAVE Series, which supports Internet metro networks, was adopted by carriers in and outside Japan for its economy, and continued to maintain the top share of the U.S. market as of 2008.
