Sensecomputing for Human-Machine Collaboration through Human Emotion Understanding

Along with the recent spectacular development of AI and IoT technologies, ICT systems such as for self-driving and speech translation are becoming more and more familiar to us, by supporting us in thinking logically, or doing some tasks instead of human workers. In the future, in order for people to make the best use of ICT systems in their work and daily lives for their convenience and pleasure, we think that ICT systems have to understand the human emotions and feelings and to respond appropriately with empathy and respect for people, in the same way as we human beings are doing in the society for building a good relationship. For achieving this goal, we need to develop a technology to handle illogical aspects of human mind such as slight signs of emotions.

Sensecomputing is a research domain for achieving a breakthrough technology to understand human psychology. It is a next-generation computing technology to enable ICT systems to understand human five senses such as sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell, as well as intuition, illusion, desire and empathy, by providing the system with functions to process the data of human ways of thinking and feelings. We are developing these cutting-edge technologies focusing on the functionalities to infer the deep psyche by catching a subtle change in behavior, to build a psychological model for describing fundamental human desires or motives for their actions, and to prompt human judgment or change of action.

With Sensecomputing, Fujitsu is envisioning the future society where ICT will support people and collaborate with them. We consider that enterprises and societies are a large one ICT system including people (Human-in-the-loop system). Sensecomputing can let us notice mistakes that we human beings tend to overlook and support the people in their tasks which can be performed only by human beings and bring out their abilities specific to human. Repeating this cycle, the whole system can keep enhancing its functionalities. Fujitsu Labs is aiming to solve various social problems such as work style reform, lifestyle change in an aging society, by using this ICT system.

We are engaged in R&D on a next-generation computing technology to enable ICT systems to understand human ways of thinking and feelings including human psychology such as five senses, intuition, illusion, desire and empathy, and to support the advancements of ICT systems including humans by enabling them to exercise their abilities specific to human.
