  4. Conference: The Future of New and Traditional Growth Industries in Japan and Germany(June 28, 2011, Berlin)

The Future of New and Traditional Growth Industries in Japan and Germany

After the financial crisis, the strong industrial cores in Japan and Germany have again become internationally admired engines of growth. Prospects look even better: over the next years, we will see explosive growth and demand from emerging countries.

But industries and policies in both countries cannot rely on their exports as much as they did in the past. Future industrial demand will come increasingly from emerging countries, in particular in Asia, which fast develop into fierce competitors. At the same time, demographic changes, environmental restraints, and global imbalances require new strategies at home as well.

Beyond opportunity and sustainability, the conference will focus on effective “profitable” future strategies for existing “traditional” industries, from autos to wholesales, which have to adjust products to emerging countries’ demand and expand production and R&D capacities in Asia. “Future” industries, from sustainable energy to sophisticated services, will be analyzed for their effective growth impact and their political and regulatory requirements. Finally, a panel discussion will outline the necessary steps to continued innovation and sustainable economic growth in traditional and new growth industries in our ageing societies.
