Fujitsu demonstrates Next Generation 100GE CFP4 ER4 Transceiver at OFC 2015

March 19, 2015

Kawasaki, Japan, March 19, 2015 - Fujitsu Optical Components Limited (FOC) announced today that a live demonstration of its next generation 100GE CFP4 ER4 transceiver will take place at OFC 2015 next week in Los Angeles, California, USA. This transceiver is designed to comply with the 100 Gigabit Ethernet ER4 (40km transmission) and next generation CFP4 MSA specifications. The demonstration can be viewed in FOC's booth #900 at the Los Angeles Convention Center on March 24 to 26, 2015.

The recent rapid increase in the volume of communications traffic has led to a spread of 100G optical networks from core networks to data center networks. 100GE optical networks are spreading as a result of the ever increasing demand for larger capacity, higher port density, and lower cost in the networks that connect the data center to the metro network. CFP transceivers (as defined in the CFP MSA (*1)) and CFP2 transceivers which offer smaller size and lower power consumption in comparison to CFP transceivers are already popular in the market. Next generations CFP4 transceivers which offer smaller size and lower power consumption in comparison to CFP2 transceivers have started to be developed. Samples of CFP4 LR4 transceivers supporting the 100GE LR4 (10km transmission) specifications have now started to ship into the market.

FOC used SOA (*2) technology to become the first company in the world to successfully mass produce CFP ER4 / CFP2 ER4 transceivers supporting the full 100G Ethernet ER4 specifications. This time FOC has successfully developed a CFP4 ER4 transceiver by using a high sensitivity APD (*3) and low noise TIA (*4) to achieve a smaller and lower power consumption transceiver. This transceiver is fully compliant to the 100G Ethernet ER4 specifications and does not require the use of error correction (FEC). The feature allows the module to interconnect with the CFP ER4 / CFP2 ER4 transceivers which are already deployed in the market.

The OFC 2015 demonstration will display a 40km optical transmission between a prototype CFP4 ER4 transceiver compliant with 100G Ethernet ER4 and a CFP ER4 transceiver. FOC will show that the transmission performance of this prototype transceiver meets the 100 Gigabit Ethernet specifications.

This product will help facilitate the development of the compact, low power consumption, 100Gbps optical network equipment that is needed to connect the datacenter with the Metro IP Networks.
