Fujitsu to manage production and distribution of over one million passes for Londoners

December 15, 2009

Fujitsu, the leading IT managed service provider, has been awarded a contract from London Councils to manage the production and distribution of over one million new smart card Freedom Passes.

The Freedom Pass is London’s concessionary fares scheme which allows more than a million Londoners aged 60 and over plus eligible disabled residents to travel free on the capital’s buses, trains, London Underground, trams, and the Docklands Light Railway as well as local buses across the country.

The new-style Freedom Passes combine both Oyster and ITSO smart card technology and have a photograph of the owner on the card itself rather than on a separate photocard as is currently the case.

The passes are normally renewed every two years to help prevent fraud, with the current passes running out on 31 March 2010. However, the new style passes, which have an added level of security, will be valid for five years.

London boroughs have paid for the Freedom Pass, run on their behalf by London Councils, for more than 20 years and have invested more than two billion into the scheme during that time.

Fujitsu has begun the preparation work already and has taken delivery of the one million blank Freedom Passes that will be issued from early January 2010. The passes will then be personalised, encoded and dispatched to re-newing or newly applying customers.

A London Councils spokesperson said: "A key reason for working with Fujitsu is its track record in delivering concessionary passes to other councils throughout England since 2008. Fujitsu has shown a willingness to work with London Councils and the London boroughs to adapt their current process to meet London’s specific needs."

Ian Lumley, regional account manager Fujitsu UK and Ireland, said: “We are pleased to have been chosen by London Councils to be their partner on the Freedom Pass project and look forward to working with London Councils and the 33 London boroughs on the delivery of the cards to the citizens of London. Fujitsu has the experience of having delivered over 4 million cards for the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme over the past 2 years.”
